Heavy Soda Trend on TikTok
A new drink trend called “heavy soda” has been bubbling up on TikTok, and if you haven’t seen it, picture this: regular gas station soda fountains… but with the syrup ratio absolutely cranked. That’s the gist. In southern Missouri, a few convenience store machines started offering a choice between the plain old stuff and a “heavy” version. The heavy one? It’s all about more syrup, less water, and fizz a soda that tastes like someone dared the machine to break the rules and triple the flavor, just to see what would happen. People are calling it “liquid dessert,” and let’s be honest, it probably is.
The point of heavy soda, at least according to folks on the front lines (aka Missouri gas stations), is pretty practical: People who work outside or drive around all day fill up their oversized cups in the morning, and as the ice melts, a normal soda gets all sad and watery by lunch. But a heavy soda? That sweetness doesn’t back down. Instead, you sip your way through caramel-thick Pepsi and Mountain Dew like the king of melted Slurpees.
Of course, TikTok’s reaction has been a mash-up of curiosity and instant regret. Some hilarious reviews: “Is this why McDonald’s Coke is so good?!” “I want to hate it, but I keep drinking…” and “If you’re at no risk of diabetes, give it a whirl.” There’s also a healthy amount of skepticism: Not everyone is lining up for the sugar rush, and, to be fair, it’s mostly a Missouri secret… for now.
But all jokes aside, health experts are practically begging everyone to chill with the syrup. Dentists warn about cavities and enamel erosion, and doctors are not thrilled about what doubling the sugar could do long-term, even if it tastes like “dessert in a cup.” Still, it’s sometimes nice to see a trend that isn’t just another dance challenge. Heavy soda might be a bit much for some, but it’s definitely got people talking and laughing as they sip on something ridiculously sweet.
