Alex Newhook Injury Update: Canadiens Star Exits With Lower-Body Injury

Alex Newhook Injury Update

In a nightmarish turn during the Montreal Canadiens' 7-0 rout at the hands of the Dallas Stars on Thursday, forward Alex Newhook suffered a frightening lower-body injury that forced him from the game early in the second period. On X, @spittinchiclets shared that Alex Newhook left the game after a collision with the boards.

The 24-year-old was racing for a loose puck behind the net when Stars defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin clipped his skate, sending Newhook crashing feet-first into the end boards. He immediately crumpled in agony, unable to bear weight on his right leg as trainers rushed to his side.

Newhook was helped off the ice and did not return, with the Canadiens confirming he's undergoing evaluation for what appears to be a right-leg issue, possibly involving his ankle or foot, based on the awkward impact. Head coach Martin St. Louis addressed the media post-game, expressing concern but holding off on specifics: "We're still evaluating him right now. I don't know the severity yet."

The team issued a brief statement: "Forward Alex Newhook is being evaluated and will not return to play tonight."  On X, @CanadiensMTL announced that Alex Newhook is being evaluated and will not return to play tonight.

This comes at a tough time for Montreal, already missing key pieces like Kirby Dach and dealing with a rash of injuries. Newhook, acquired from Colorado in a blockbuster deal last summer, has been a steady middle-six contributor this season with eight points in 15 games, showing flashes of the upside that made him a first-round pick in 2019.

His speed and two-way play have been vital on the third line alongside Oliver Kapanen and Ivan Demidov. Fans are holding their breath. No timeline has been announced, but the visual of Newhook hopping off raised alarms reminiscent of past ankle woes. Early speculation points to weeks on the shelf if it's a sprain, but the Habs will provide more clarity soon.
