Andre Drummond Injury Update: Sixers Center Suffers Right Knee Sprain vs. Nets

Andre Drummond Injury Update

Andre Drummond left the Philadelphia game against the Brooklyn Nets with a right knee injury in the second quarter. He went down after contesting a shot near the basket and grabbed at his right leg right away. He could not put weight on the leg and needed help to get off the floor. Cameras later showed him in a wheelchair in the tunnel which made the whole scene feel serious.

The team called it a right knee sprain on the in arena update and ruled him out for the rest of the night. A later report described it as a hyperextended knee based on the first medical look. That means the knee bent past its normal range and the soft tissue took the hit. Right now it is still an early label and not a full final diagnosis.

Drummond had been in the middle of a strong stretch for the Sixers before this. With Joel Embiid already dealing with his own knee problems Drummond had stepped into a bigger role. He was putting up double double level numbers with big rebound totals and efficient scoring. He had even added some three point shooting which opened the floor for the offense.

In the game where he got hurt he already had seven points and four boards in limited minutes. The Sixers were in control of the score yet the mood changed as soon as he stayed down on the floor. Teammates surrounded him while the medical staff checked the knee. The bench reaction showed how much he means to this group on the court and in the locker room.

After Drummond left the game the Sixers had to patch together the center spot. Adem Bona returned from his own ankle issue and took some of those minutes. Young bigs like Johni Broome and wings like Dominick Barlow and Jabari Walker became small ball options. That mix can work for short stretches but it is not the same as having a proven rebounder and rim protector.

For the short term Drummond should be treated as very uncertain for the next few games. The team will likely send him for imaging on the knee to see if there is ligament damage or only a moderate sprain. Until those results come out there will not be an exact timetable. A sprain with no major tear can still mean missed time especially for a big man who relies on power in the paint.

This injury hits the Sixers rotation at a bad moment with Embiid already missing multiple games. Nick Nurse may have to manage the position by matchup using Bona for energy minutes then shifting to smaller lineups when needed. That likely means more pressure on perimeter players to rebound and protect the lane.

For now the clear update is simple. Drummond has a right knee sprain or hyperextension he did not return to the Nets game and he is awaiting more tests to see how long he will be out.
