Anthony Richardson Injury Update: Preseason Debut Cut Short by Finger Injury

Anthony Richardson Injury Update

Anthony Richardson is once again in the news—and not for the reasons Colts fans were hoping. During Thursday’s preseason clash against the Baltimore Ravens, Richardson exited early after dislocating his pinkie finger on his throwing hand. Yep, just as he started to find his groove, the injury bug bit him on the second series of the game. In a post shared on X, @SportMDAnalysis (Dr. Deepak Chona) noted that Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has sustained a dislocated pinky finger.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen told the press that Richardson is "day to day" and thankfully avoided any long-term issues. The finger was popped right back into place, but they played it safe and kept him on the sidelines for the rest of the night. Let’s say, if you’re on Team Richardson, you’ve earned your stripes dealing with these constant injury updates.

How Did the Injury Happen?

Midway through the first quarter, Richardson dropped back, feeling confident, maybe even a little too relaxed. Out of nowhere, Ravens linebacker David Ojabo barreled in unblocked on Richardson’s right side. Bam! Richardson got sacked hard, hitting the turf and immediately favoring his right hand.

Replay showed his pinkie bending at a pretty gnarly angle (cue the cringe). He got up slowly, jogged off, and tried to grip the ball on the sideline, but it was obvious something wasn’t right. No heroic return; backup Daniel Jones came in to finish out the game for Indy. Social media buzz surrounding Anthony Richardson’s injury continues to grow, with X user @atioberoi weighing in on the situation. Questioning the visible taping on Richardson’s finger, they speculated that it might not be a clear break.

When Will Anthony Richardson Return?

The word out of Indy is that he's day-to-day. No fancy medical terms or drawn-out mysteries, just a regular dislocated finger that got popped back in and should heal up with a bit of rest.  Colts coach Steichen hasn’t committed to Richardson playing in the next preseason game, which is coming up against the Packers on August 16. The team’s hoping he’ll be ready to participate, but if he’s still feeling it, they won’t push him. Daniel Jones is probably getting the next start while Richardson recovers.

Anthony Richardson Stats

Stats time! Richardson’s numbers in 2024 were a mixed bag—1814 passing yards, 8 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and 499 rushing yards with 6 rushing TDs in just 11 games. In the brief preseason outing before the finger fiasco, he completed 2 of 3 passes for 21 yards.

He was expected to play into the second quarter before the injury crashed the party. The rookie season was even shorter after a shoulder injury, but when he’s healthy, you can see flashes of the excitement Indy was banking on.
