Bennedict Mathurin Injury Update
Bennedict Mathurin, a key guard for the Indiana Pacers, is once again on the team’s long list of injuries just three games into the new season. Mathurin sprained his right big toe during a tough loss to the Memphis Grizzlies and was forced out of the next matchup against the Timberwolves, with the swelling and soreness simply too much to keep playing. He actually tried to fight through it by tightening his sneaker, old-school, tough kid stuff, but quickly realized he couldn’t push through and asked out, eventually leaving the arena in a walking boot. Honestly, it’s hard not to feel for the guy, especially after such a strong start where he was dropping over 30 points a game and looking like an early most-improved candidate for the Pacers.
The team hasn’t pinned down a precise return date for Mathurin yet. Coach Rick Carlisle says it’s a “week-to-week” situation, which, in NBA-speak, usually means the staff really just needs more time to see how the injury responds. Mathurin’s going to get more imaging done back in Indianapolis before any decisions are made, but fans shouldn’t expect him back on the court in the immediate future. Especially since toe sprains, particularly on a player’s dominant foot, can linger and mess with your explosiveness and jump shot, it’s clear Indiana is going to be careful. The locker room atmosphere probably isn’t great right now, with so many guys walking wounded (or not walking at all).
For a Pacers squad that was already reeling from the loss of their franchise playmaker, Tyrese Haliburton, for the season, Mathurin’s absence makes it even tougher to stay competitive. The depth chart thins out, and guys like Ben Sheppard and Aaron Nesmith suddenly have to take on bigger roles. There’s a little comic relief in seeing the Pacers sign a three-time dunk contest champ (Mac McClung) just to fill out the guard rotation. It’s one way to find some excitement while waiting for stars to heal.
Mathurin’s weekly status updates will be closely watched. As for the Pacers, they’re hoping the injury bug settles down and their young scorers can keep things interesting. Until Mathurin is back, every game is going to be a test of grit and improvisation, something this group is fast becoming too familiar with.
