Christian Yelich Injury Update: Brewers Star Sidelined with Back Soreness

Christian Yelich Injury Update

Christian Yelich was scratched from the Milwaukee Brewers’ lineup just before their September 3rd game against the Phillies with—you guessed it—lower back soreness, something that’s become a bit of an unwelcome tradition for both Yelich and Brewers fans lately. This isn’t just another day off either; manager Pat Murphy acknowledged after the game that Yelich had actually started feeling that familiar back pain about a week ago, but being the gritty workhorse he is, he played through it until the team decided a reset was wiser—especially after the gauntlet of 19 games in 18 days the Brewers just survived.

Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) reported on Twitter that Christian Yelich was scratched from the Milwaukee Brewers’ starting lineup for tonight due to low back soreness, according to the team.

Hunter Baumgardt (@hunterbonair) shared on Twitter that Brewers Manager Pat Murphy revealed Christian Yelich has been dealing with back soreness.

Now, as of today, the plan is to shelve Yelich through Thursday (so don’t expect to see him torpedoing balls into the seats against Ranger Suarez) and—fingers crossed—hopefully have him back for the weekend series in Pittsburgh.

Painful as his absence is for fans, Milwaukee did show some spunk by scoring five runs in the first inning against the Phillies without him, so there’s that. It does feel a bit like déjà vu; Yelich’s back woes cost him 20 games early last season, then major surgery took him out in August 2024 when he was leading the league in batting average.

Even so, 2025’s been a bit of a renaissance: 27 home runs, 92 RBI, .268 average—actual star numbers again, and you could almost forget about the nagging injury saga, at least until last night. Sure, fans are worried, but as Yelich knows (maybe better than anyone in that locker room), recovery isn’t always a straight line. If he comes back even 90% for the pennant push, Milwaukee’s odds look a whole lot brighter.

But ask any Brewers fan—there’s always that nervous twitch when Yelich rubs his back. Maybe that’s just how it’s going to be for a while; sometimes you just have to yell at your own TV, wish the man some good luck, and hope tomorrow’s injury update is one of those boring, reassuring ones: “Yelich back in the lineup.” That’s all anyone wants to read at this point.
