Dan Burn Injury Update
Dan Burn has suffered a rib fracture after a heavy collision in the Tyne Wear derby against Sunderland and is now recovering after a spell in hospital. Newcastle have not given a clear return date yet so his short term status is uncertain.
Dan Burn started the derby for Newcastle and got hurt in the first half after a strong challenge with Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele. Reports say Mukiele’s knee caught Burn in the chest and rib area while both players went for the ball near the touchline. Burn tried to play on after treatment but looked in clear pain.
He later signalled to the bench that he was struggling to breathe properly. Newcastle staff took him off before half time and he left the stadium in an ambulance for checks on his ribs. Local reports and follow up coverage confirm that scans showed a rib fracture.
Manager Eddie Howe called the situation a real problem in his post match comments. He explained that Burn had difficulty breathing at half time so the medical team decided he had to go to hospital. Howe also said they are waiting on full test results to learn how serious the damage is and how long Burn will be out.
The injury comes at a bad time for Newcastle defence. They already have other defenders out and Burn has been a regular starter on the left side of the back line. His absence could force Howe to shuffle the back four again and rely more on options like Fabian Schar who came on when Burn went off.
Right now there is no firm public timeline on his return. Rib fractures often take a few weeks to heal depending on the exact damage and how the player responds to pain and breathing issues but the club has not confirmed any target date. For now the only clear information is that Burn has a fractured rib after the Sunderland clash and will miss time while doctors manage his recovery.
