Darren Waller Injury Update
Darren Waller is back from his pectoral injury and is now dealing with a minor knee issue that the team is treating as a rest plus maintenance situation.
Darren Waller returned to the NFL this season for the Miami Dolphins after coming out of retirement. He hurt his pectoral muscle in Week 7 against the Cleveland Browns and the team put him on injured reserve. Early fear was that it could be a serious tear but tests showed a strain so he did not need surgery and his season was not over.
Because of the IR move he had to miss at least four games. Reports in late October and early November said he would be out through around Week 12 with a possible return window starting in Week 13 against the New Orleans Saints. During this time Miami relied on other tight ends including Greg Dulcich while Waller focused on rehab and strength work for the injured chest.
In mid December the Dolphins activated Waller from injured reserve. He was cleared to practice and logged several limited sessions as he ramped up. The team listed him as questionable at first but activation from IR signaled that medical staff were comfortable with the way his pectoral injury had healed.
After his return he played in multiple games for Miami. Recent practice reports now list him with rest and knee as the reason for his limited status. He took a hit to the knee in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers but stayed available around that time and has not gone back on injured reserve.
Right now Waller is described as limited in practice due to rest plus knee. That wording usually means the team is managing his workload late in the season after he already missed time earlier with the pectoral problem. Coaches have used optimistic language about his availability as long as there is no setback.
For fantasy managers and fans the key points are simple. His pectoral strain has healed enough for him to be activated and play again. The knee issue is being handled with lighter practice work rather than another long absence so his short term status depends on how he responds in the final sessions before each game.
