Dolphins RB De’Von Achane Sidelined with Calf Injury as Preseason Winds Down
The Miami Dolphins are taking a cautious approach with one of their most explosive offensive weapons. Head coach Mike McDaniel announced Monday that running back De’Von Achane will miss this week of practice while he recovers from a calf injury.
De'von Achane Injury Update
Achane was held out of Saturday’s preseason matchup against the Detroit Lions and sat during joint practices as well. McDaniel explained the team’s decision was primarily “preventative in nature”, emphasizing the tricky nature of calf injuries for speed-heavy players.
On X, reporter Cameron Wolfe (@CameronWolfe) shared updates from Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel regarding key players. Running back De’Von Achane is dealing with a calf injury and is expected to sit out of practice this week, as the team wants to prevent the issue from lingering. However, the plan remains for him to be ready for Week 1 against the Colts. Defensive lineman Zach Sieler is set to return to practice this week, while the status of tight end Darren Waller coming off the PUP list is still to be determined.
“Calves are the ones that you have to be super proactive with, especially with explosive players,” McDaniel told reporters. “We don’t want this to become a long, nagging issue.”
The Dolphins are hopeful Achane will be available for their Week 1 opener against the Indianapolis Colts on September 7, though McDaniel has made no firm guarantees.

Achane’s Role and Production
Achane has quickly emerged as a key piece in Miami’s offense. The third-year back racked up 1,499 scrimmage yards and 12 touchdowns last season, solidifying himself as one of the NFL’s most dynamic playmakers. His ability to turn any touch into a big gain has made him indispensable to McDaniel’s offensive scheme.
Opportunity for the Backups
With Alexander Mattison out for the year due to a neck injury, Achane’s absence gives Miami’s young backs a chance to showcase themselves.
-
Jaylen Wright, now in his second season, started against the Lions but struggled with just three yards on four carries.
-
Ollie Gordon II, a sixth-round rookie from Oklahoma State, looked sharper. He carried 10 times for 50 yards and added two receptions for nine yards.
The battle for the primary backup spot behind Achane could heat up in the Dolphins’ preseason finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
What’s Next
The Dolphins will hold a joint practice with the Jaguars on Thursday before their final preseason contest Saturday night. While Achane’s status will remain a storyline to monitor, all indications point to Miami ensuring he’s ready for the games that matter most.
