Divinity Original Sin 2 Update
Larian has released native versions of Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition for PS5 Xbox Series X S and Switch 2. Before this the game relied on backward compatibility or older ports which limited performance and visual quality.
Now there are proper current gen builds that install as their own version. These editions are treated as the definitive way to play the game on console going forward.

Free upgrade for existing owners
If you already own Divinity Original Sin 2 on PS4 Xbox One or the first Nintendo Switch you can move up to the new versions at no extra cost in most regions. The only special case is Japan where the upgrade on PS5 and Switch 2 has a small 100 yen charge.
New players can also buy the current gen release directly on PS5 Xbox Series and Switch 2 as a complete package. Either way the game you get is the full Definitive Edition with all its past fixes and content adjustments.
Performance and visual changes
The focus of this update is performance not new story content. Larian wants the game to feel smooth on modern hardware without changing how it plays.
On Xbox Series X S the Definitive Edition now targets 60 frames per second with higher resolution support and better use of the console hardware. The experience should feel more stable in large fights and in busy areas that used to stutter on older systems.
On PS5 the new build aims for similar gains with cleaner image quality and improved frame rate compared to the PS4 version. It gives console players something closer to the smoothness that PC users with strong hardware already enjoyed.
For Nintendo Switch 2 the official store page confirms higher resolution and a smoother experience with increased frame rate compared to the original Switch edition. Players who tried both versions report sharper textures and clearer visuals even if the game still runs at console friendly frame rates rather than a locked high number in all scenes.
What stays the same in gameplay
This update does not change the core of Divinity Original Sin 2. You still get the same tactical turn based combat the same freedom in character building and the same story.
Larian has not detailed any major new balance passes or feature rewrites tied only to this current gen release. Instead the studio frames this as a modern console version of the existing Definitive Edition rather than a full remaster.
Your choices still shape quests and story paths. Cooperative play both online and local remains a big part of the experience alongside flexible character creation.
How it connects to the new Divinity
The timing of this update is not random. Larian recently announced a new game titled Divinity at The Game Awards 2025 which returns to the same universe in a new story.
The studio has said that the new game stands alone but players who know the older titles may notice small links or familiar characters. So the current gen upgrade gives fans a clear path to replay Divinity Original Sin 2 on modern hardware while waiting for the next entry.
Overall this update makes an eight year old RPG much easier to recommend to new console players. It respects the original design keeps the content intact and simply lets the game run in a way that fits today’s hardware.
