George Springer Injury Update: What Happened to George Springer?

George Springer Injury Update

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer gave Blue Jays fans quite a scare Monday night in Baltimore. In the ninth inning against the Orioles, Springer was hit in the head by a 96-mph fastball from rookie Kade Strowd. The stadium fell silent as Springer went down and lay motionless for nearly a minute. It was a frightening scene, and he stayed on the ground as trainers and manager John Schneider hurried out to check on him. Thankfully, after a tense pause, he was alert, able to get to his knees, and then walked off the field under his own power with help from staff.

On Twitter, Keegan Matheson shared a post about:

“Obvious concern from John Schneider about George Springer, but he said:

“It kind of got him in his shoulder, then helmet, which… thankfully, he was able to turn a little bit, too. I just had a chance to talk with him. He’s with the doc right now getting evaluated.” #BlueJays”

Manager John Schneider shared after the game that the fastball hit George on the shoulder before striking the helmet, which helped soften the blow. “He’s doing all right… He was alert the whole time,” Schneider told the media postgame. As of late Monday, Springer was undergoing further evaluation, but the initial signs were positive: he was talking clearly and didn’t appear to be in immediate danger of serious injury. With the Blue Jays in the thick of the playoff chase, the hope in the clubhouse is that this will not be a long-term absence for the team’s All-Star outfielder.

What Happened to George Springer?

The incident with Springer was no ordinary HBP (hit by pitch). Strowd’s 96-mph pitch rode up and in, catching Springer squarely on the left ear flap of his helmet after glancing off his shoulder. Springer crumpled to the dirt instantly, and play ceased as everyone in Camden Yards held their breath. Trainers and teammates formed a circle around him, and after a minute of not moving, Springer slowly got to his knees. Eventually, with support, he returned to the dugout, visibly shaken but walking under his own power.

After the game, John Schneider repeated how thankful he was that Springer was able to react a bit, possibly lessening what could have been a much more serious outcome. Strowd, the Orioles pitcher, could be seen kneeling on the mound, visibly concerned for Springer as he awaited updates. For now, the Jays haven’t placed Springer on the Injured List, but his status for the next game or two is up in the air as doctors keep him under close watch.
