Heated Rivalry Episode 3 Recap

Heated Rivalry episode 3 titled Hunter shifts the focus away from Shane and Ilya and follows Scott Hunter and his secret romance with Kip Grady.​

The episode is adapted from Rachel Reid’s novel Game Changer and works as a side story that still connects back to the main couple’s world.​

The hour opens at the Sochi Olympics where Scott hears talk about how dangerous Russia is for gay athletes which sets up his fear of being out and frames the story as a look into his closeted life.​

From there the story jumps back a few months to New York where Scott meets Kip at a smoothie shop and quickly falls for him after Kip makes him a custom drink that becomes part of his pre game routine.​

Scott keeps returning to the shop and their flirting builds until they bump into each other again at a charity event where Kip is working and that chance meeting leads to an actual date and then a secret relationship.​

Kip is open about who he is but Scott insists on hiding the romance from the public and from teammates which creates tension even as they fall into an intense and very affectionate rhythm together.​

The episode sprinkles in small intimate details to show how serious they are like Kip gifting Scott banana print socks so he can carry the “lucky” smoothie feeling to away games and Scott inviting him into his home even though he has never brought a man there before.​

At the same time Scott’s panic attacks and discomfort in public queer spaces such as an art gallery visit show how much the closet is crushing him and how deeply he fears losing hockey after a childhood where the sport and a scholarship saved his life.​

Things fall apart after another charity event where Kip attends as the date of his friend Elena who later tells Scott that Kip is miserable living as a secret even though he loves him and is trying to endure it.​
Scott still cannot bring himself to show up even as a friend at Kip’s birthday and that becomes the breaking point so Kip walks away and goes back to his family which leaves Scott alone and the couple separated by the end of the episode.​

The final stretch underlines that this detour matters for the larger story because Scott’s struggle with coming out and with being a gay star in the league will later change what is possible for Shane and Ilya.​
Episode 3 ends on the same kind of emotional cliff as episode 2 with another queer love story broken for now while hinting that Scott’s choices will be key to the future of every gay player in this world.
