It doesn’t look like anyone is officially leaving Grey’s Anatomy, at least not yet. The Season 22 fall finale, however, sure made fans nervous. Between Jo Wilson’s terrifying heart condition and Richard Webber’s unexpected cancer diagnosis, it felt like the writers were dangling the possibility of two major exits right in front of us just before the holiday break. Classic Grey’s fashion ended the episode with chaos, rolled the credits, and left everyone staring at their TV in emotional free fall.
Let’s start with Jo. Poor Jo can’t catch a break. In the fall finale, “When I Crash,” she was diagnosed with peripartum cardiomyopathy a dangerous heart condition tied to pregnancy. What was supposed to be a calm checkup turned into a medical nightmare when her heart started to fail, forcing Winston to perform a high-stakes C-section (even though he hadn’t done one since med school). The scene had fans on edge, and for good reason, it ended with Jo and her babies crashing in the O.R. That cliffhanger was brutal.
Camilla Luddington, who’s played Jo for 14 seasons, talked about filming those moments in an interview and described the upcoming episodes as “brutal” and “dark.” She teased that “survival is not guaranteed,” which, coming from someone who’s survived a lot on this show, says plenty. Still, Deadline confirmed she’s contracted for the full 18-episode season, so fans can breathe for now. Her fate will pick up when the series returns on January 7.
Then there’s Richard Webber. Longtime viewers have practically grown up watching James Pickens Jr. play this steady, grounded mentor. To learn he’s now battling cancer felt like a gut punch, especially considering his wife Catherine’s ongoing fight with the disease. But as heartbreaking as that reveal was, there’s no sign of him leaving either. Pickens is still front and center in the Season 22 promo art, right beside Chandra Wilson and Ellen Pompeo (even though Pompeo’s barely around these days). So, despite that diagnosis, Richard seems safe for now.
On X, a fan @ninabubblgyum shared their frustration, saying, "Richard Webber has cancer, Jo Wilson's heart is failing and she's giving birth early, Hen Wilson is apparently terminally ill, and Bobby Nash is still nowhere to be found. Horrible night for me."
The rest of Grey Sloan’s crew, from Teddy and Owen’s latest mess to the new crop of interns falling into the usual romantic entanglements, seems to be sticking around too. That said, Grey’s has a long history of pulling the rug out from under us; just because someone isn’t leaving today doesn’t mean they won’t be gone tomorrow. The writers love a shock twist, and honestly, fans expect it at this point.
If there’s a word that sums up how people are feeling right now, it’s anxious. The internet lit up after the finale aired, everyone asking, “Is Jo gonna die?” or “They can’t actually write off Richard, right?” The good news? The show’s producer confirmed both actors are regulars for Season 22. The bad news? She also hinted that the next episode “gets worse.” Which, from a Grey’s perspective, almost guarantees a few tears, maybe some CPR, and a lot of panicked voicemails left at 2 a.m.
So no, nobody’s leaving Grey’s Anatomy… yet. But if you’ve been watching this show long enough, you know that safety isn’t exactly a permanent condition at Grey Sloan Memorial.
