Tamil Nadu has been battling heavy rain for the past few days, triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, prompting the authorities to shut schools and colleges in multiple districts. Cyclone Ditwah has thrown life out of gear in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring areas, and schools in several parts of the state, including Chennai, have been closed in the past days. As the remnants of cyclonic storm Ditwah move northwards towards the Chennai coast and Andhra Pradesh, it is expected to bring more rainfall to the region.

Will Schools Be Closed on 4 December 2025 in Chennai?

Schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu were closed on December 3, Wednesday, due to continuous heavy rainfall, triggered by the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah. The incessant downpour disrupted normal life across the region, with waterlogging in low-lying areas making it difficult to travel.

Chennai Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade confirmed that all educational institutions in the district would remain closed on Wednesday, December 3, because of overnight rain and the impact on the city's infrastructure. In addition, Madras University and Anna University postponed semester examinations scheduled for Tuesday, with revised dates expected to be announced soon.

As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding school closures on December 4, Thursday. However, the ongoing heavy rainfall, especially in Chennai and surrounding districts like Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu, raises the possibility of schools being closed again tomorrow. Given the severe weather conditions and continuous downpour for the past several days, there is a strong chance that educational institutions may remain closed for another day.
