Jonathan Kuminga Injury Update
Jonathan Kuminga is out with soreness in both knees right now and has missed three straight games for the Golden State Warriors. Reports list it as bilateral knee patellar tendonitis sometimes described as knee tendinitis in both knees.
The team has said there is no structural damage which means scans did not show ligament or major cartilage issues. This kind of tendon problem usually comes from heavy workload and jumping over time.
The team medical staff is treating it as a pain and load management issue more than a serious tear.
Kuminga left a recent win over the San Antonio Spurs at halftime with knee soreness and did not return. He was then ruled out for the next games including matchups with the Spurs again the New Orleans Pelicans and the Orlando Magic.
Official injury reports list him as out with bilateral knee tendonitis and note that the Warriors are being cautious. This has now become at least a short streak of missed games as he manages pain in both knees.
Team voices and national reporters have described his absence as relatively short term. Steve Kerr has sounded hopeful that Kuminga could be back soon with some reports saying his return is right around the corner.
There is no exact public timetable from the team yet. The plan is for rest treatment and a gradual ramp up instead of rushing him back and risking a setback.
Before the injury Kuminga had started the season well with around 14 points seven rebounds and three assists per game in about 29 minutes. His athletic drives cutting and defense had made him an important part of the rotation even after some recent benching and role changes.
The knee issue comes at a tricky time because coaches were already adjusting lineups and his minutes had dipped a bit. Now the focus shifts from his role to simply getting him healthy so he can get back to that early season level.
With Kuminga out players like Moses Moody Will Richard and Buddy Hield have seen or are expected to see more chances on the wing. The Warriors are leaning on veterans for spacing and defense while they wait for Kuminga to return.
There is concern about his nagging knees but the organization is treating it as something that can be handled with smart management not as a season ending problem. If his pain responds well over the next week he should be back in the rotation though it is not clear if that will be as a starter or from the bench.
