Trainers rushed over right away. He lay still for several minutes. Then they strapped him to a stretcher and took him off the field. The stadium went silent. His teammates came together by the end zone to show support.
Coach Brent Venables was worried at first. He said Lewis was awake and talking. Lewis said his head and legs felt fine, but his back hurt. After the hit, staff sent him to the hospital as a safety measure. Early exams came back with good signs. X rays were negative for any broken bones.
By halftime, Lewis was up and moving in the training room. He was able to walk with help. Scans after the game also looked fine. The team and coach both said things looked a lot better than everyone first feared.
Players and coaches said they hope he makes a full recovery. The team plans to look at adding padding to the wall for future games to avoid another accident like this. Lewis has had head injuries before, but this time there’s no sign of lasting damage so far.
Right now, Lewis has 17 catches with 210 yards and two touchdowns for the season. He just came to Oklahoma from Southern Illinois and has played a key role since Game One. The latest from the team is that he’s stable and recovering. The team will keep checking on him before he returns to play
