Kylian Mbappé Injury Update: What Happened to Kylian Mbappé

Kylian Mbappé Injury Update

Kylian Mbappé won’t be making headlines for his heroics on the pitch today. Instead, he’s in the spotlight for what every France and Real Madrid fan dreads: injury news. The French Football Federation confirmed Mbappé’s absence for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Iceland, citing a right ankle injury that flared up during the 3-0 win over Azerbaijan. Not exactly the sort of international break anyone wanted, especially with France on the brink of securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup.

On Twitter, Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) reported that Kylian Mbappé completed tests on his ankle injury, which isn’t considered serious. Real Madrid expects him to be available for the upcoming week.

The Real Madrid forward had started that game and casually knocked in a goal before limping off in the 83rd minute,  a real “here we go again” moment if you’ve been following his ankle drama all season. Just last week, he took a whack to the same ankle playing Villarreal, and you have to wonder if Madrid’s medical staff has his WhatsApp on speed dial at this point. Nothing bothers fans quite like hearing their star striker needs a break, especially with some huge fixtures looming. Getafe’s up next, then there’s a Champions League clash, then Barcelona. “Rest, ice, repeat” is probably the mantra at Mbappé’s house now, right along with “not again!”.

On Twitter, @theMadridZone reported that Kylian Mbappé requested to be subbed out after feeling pain in his right ankle, the same one injured last week. He left limping and went straight to the locker room.

On the bright side, word from club sources and medical tests says it’s not as bad as first feared,  no torn ligaments, no surgery talk, just some pain and swelling. He’ll miss Iceland, but could be spotted at training back in Madrid soon. Is it weird that the phrase “light training” sounds more comforting than ever? For France, there are plenty of other absentees this week, so Mbappé gets a pass. Rest up, Kylian. If anyone can shrug off a bum ankle and come back scoring, it’s probably you.
