Landry Shamet Injury Update
Landry Shamet is dealing with a sprained right shoulder and will be out of the New York Knicks lineup for at least four weeks. The team will check the injury again around late December which means his return could slip into January if the shoulder does not respond well to rehab.
The injury happened in a game against the Orlando Magic when Shamet ran into a solid screen set by Wendell Carter Junior and came away holding his right shoulder. He left the floor in pain and did not come back for the rest of the night which raised concern because this is the same shoulder that bothered him in the past.
Later tests showed a shoulder sprain rather than a full dislocation which removed the fear of immediate surgery but still pointed to a multi week absence.
Medical staff have started him on a rehab plan that focuses on reducing pain and restoring strength and stability in the joint. For now the plan is conservative which means rest treatment and strengthening work instead of an operation. Because this shoulder has a history of issues the Knicks are expected to stay cautious and not rush him back even if he feels better before the four week check.
Reports from league outlets say he will be re evaluated in about four weeks rather than given a fixed return date. If everything goes well he could target a return around the Christmas period or early in the new year but that depends on how the shoulder responds to rehab and on how stable it looks during contact work.
There is always a chance of a setback with a repeat shoulder problem so the timeline should be seen as flexible rather than guaranteed.
Before the injury Shamet had carved out a useful role off the Knicks bench as a floor spacer who can handle the ball in short stretches and punish defenses from the perimeter. He averaged roughly nine points per game and shot above forty two percent from three which made him one of the more reliable shooters on a roster that leans heavily on spacing around its primary creators.
His absence forces coach Tom Thibodeau to adjust the guard rotation with more minutes likely for Miles McBride and Jordan Clarkson along with increased responsibility for other wings to stretch the floor.
The injury also adds another layer to the questions around Shamet long term fit in New York. He is on a contract that gives the front office some flexibility but repeated shoulder concerns could influence decisions about his role or inclusion in future trades as the Knicks look to strengthen around their core.
For now the focus stays on getting him healthy protecting that right shoulder and seeing if he can return to his prior shooting form once he is cleared for game action.
