Mallory Swanson Parents: Meet Karen & Horace Pugh and Their Role in Her Journey

Mallory Swanson Parents: Athletic Roots, Childhood Stories & Family Influence

Mallory Swanson’s parents, Karen and Horace Pugh, shaped much of who she is hard-working, competitive, and stubborn in the best possible way. Her mom, Karen, was a dedicated long-distance runner, while her dad, Horace, ran track and played football, which, frankly, made complaining about a rough soccer practice pretty pointless. Horace famously told his daughters after they whined, “You’re crying to the wrong two people” because in their house, tough love was just what came after dinner.

Mallory grew up in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, looking up to her older sister, Brianna, not just for the usual hand-me-downs and big-sister wisdom, but as the spark for her own soccer journey. Those endless drives to soccer clubs, messy car snacks, and sibling banter probably built just as much grit as any official training.

Her parents’ athletic background wasn’t just about medals after their sports careers, Horace went into business management and Karen became a hands-on mom, running the family’s day-to-day. Karen also supported Horace with his business after her competitive running days. Brianna, meanwhile, half-jokes that she “dragged” Mallory everywhere, but now admits the younger sibling is the family superstar.

Mallory’s biracial heritage African-American from her dad, American from her mom adds another layer to her family story, making for a household where diverse perspectives shaped open-mindedness and resilience. The home vibe? Competitive, busy, sometimes messy, but always deeply supportive. Mallory herself credits her family for giving her the confidence and the stubborn streak that set her apart on the field.

And for what it’s worth, Karen and Horace didn’t just push Mallory toward soccer. They pushed her to be curious, self-reliant, and never too hard on herself. Soccer was a blast, sure, but in the Pugh house there was always something more—like family jokes, open support, and, let’s be honest, probably a few eye rolls over missed goals and muddy uniforms. That’s real family, and that’s how Mallory Swanson grew up
