Mavis Staples New Album Release Date
Mavis Staples has a new album called Sad and Beautiful World coming out on November 7, 2025. That’s the official release date. The album is published by ANTI Records.
Sad and Beautiful World is the follow-up to her 2019 release We Get By. Her new album mixes originals and covers. There’s songs written by Tom Waits, Gillian Welch, Curtis Mayfield, Leonard Cohen, Frank Ocean, and Kevin Morby.
The record has ten tracks. Kevin Morby’s Beautiful Strangers is the lead single. Mavis shared her version in August 2025. She also covered Godspeed by Frank Ocean earlier this year. The album includes the title track, Sad and Beautiful World, which is a Sparklehorse cover.
Staples worked with producer Brad Cook on all the songs. Cook is known for his work with Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, Nathaniel Rateliff, and others. He focused on Mavis’s voice and kept arrangements simple. After the vocals, more instruments were added to support the sound without drowning it out.
The album features guest appearances—Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, Derek Trucks, Katie Crutchfield, MJ Lenderman, and Justin Vernon. These are artists that Staples has worked with over the years. The collaborations create a sense of community.
At 86, Mavis still tours and records. She’s been performing for seven decades. She started out singing with her family in the Staple Singers. She’s the last living member of the group. She’s won Grammys and has been inducted into many halls of fame.
Sad and Beautiful World blends soul, gospel, and blues. The songs reflect on loss, hope, and love. Themes include getting through tough times and finding beauty even when things feel hard. Staples says, “I just have to deliver the compassion I feel” and wants listeners to “share the song the way I feel it”.
The album will be available on streaming platforms and stores on November 7, 2025. Some singles can already be played online. Tour shows for the new album are scheduled in Chicago, Nashville, and New York this fall.
