Miguel Amaya Injury Update: Left Ankle Injury Forces Return to IL After Just One Game

Miguel Amaya Injury Update

Miguel Amaya left Wednesday night’s game against the Blue Jays with a left ankle sprain, just one day after returning from the injured list. He was hurt stepping on first base in the second inning, immediately going down and needing help off the field. The Cubs later confirmed the diagnosis and placed him back on the IL. No timeline has been given yet. Blue Jays Dad (@BlueJaysDad) shared on Twitter,  that Miguel Amaya appeared to suffer a severe injury while running through first base, possibly a hyperextended knee or torn ACL.

It’s a tough blow for both Amaya and the team, especially since his return was meant to give Chicago another steady presence behind the plate heading into the final stretch of the season.

How Did the Injury Happen?

In his first at-bat back, Amaya hit an infield chopper and beat the throw to the bag. As his foot made contact, his ankle rolled sharply inward. He fell instantly and stayed down, clearly in discomfort. Trainers came out right away, and after a brief evaluation, they helped him straight to the dugout.

It wasn’t a dirty play or collision, just one of those sudden, awkward steps that change a night in a matter of seconds.

When Did Miguel Amaya Return?

Amaya had been reinstated from the 60-day injured list on August 12 after missing two months with a left oblique strain. He played his first and only game back on August 13 before the ankle injury occurred. Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) reported on Twitter that Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya was carted off the field with an injury on his first day back since a 60-day IL stint for an oblique strain.

He’d worked steadily through rehab games in Arizona, and there was optimism about him finishing the season strong. Now, the Cubs will have to reshuffle plans behind the plate yet again.
