Norman Powell Injury Update
Norman Powell is on the injury report again this week but he is still trending to play. The Miami Heat guard is dealing with tightness in his left calf.
He missed practice on Wednesday because of this calf issue. Reports from team media said it was a new problem and the staff wanted to be careful since the Heat are starting a back to back set.
At first he was listed as questionable for the game against the Brooklyn Nets. By Thursday afternoon the official report moved him to probable.
The expectation is that he will suit up unless the calf tightens again during warmups. The team still views it as a minor issue but they know he has carried a heavy scoring load.
This calf concern comes after a busy month of knocks for Powell. In late November he strained his left groin and missed at least one game against the Dallas Mavericks while the Heat waited on MRI results.
He first felt that groin problem in a game with the Chicago Bulls where he went to the locker room and returned later after treatment.
Early December brought a new problem with a sprained left ankle. Miami ruled him out of a road game at Dallas on December three because of that ankle sprain as they faced a stretch of three games in four nights.
He was considered day to day after that and the team treated it like a short term setback. Despite the injuries he still came back quickly from both the groin strain and the ankle sprain.
Each time he returned he went right back into a main role as a scorer on the wing. In his first season with Miami he has been the leading scorer with roughly twenty five points per game along with solid rebounds assists and steals.
This is why the Heat are so careful with every new issue for him. They already lost games from Tyler Herro because of a toe injury so Powell often carries the offense when Herro sits.
When Powell got hurt the team leaned more on Davion Mitchell Jaime Jaquez and others to hold up the backcourt. Right now the calf tightness does not look like a long term problem.
He is on track to play against the Nets with a probable tag on the NBA injury report. The Heat might still limit his minutes slightly or watch how he moves in the first half especially with more games coming quickly.
Powell is banged up after a stretch of groin ankle and now calf issues but he keeps returning fast and playing through pain. For fantasy players he remains a strong play whenever active but there is always a small risk of a rest night or a shorter run if the calf or groin flares up again.
