OG Anunoby Injury Update
OG Anunoby is working his way back from a left hamstring strain and the tone around the Knicks is cautious but positive. He picked up the injury on November 14 against the Miami Heat when he came up grabbing his leg in the first quarter and was ruled out for the rest of the game.
The team later confirmed it was a left hamstring strain and said he would be out for at least two weeks while the medical staff checked how the muscle responded to rest and treatment.
After that first window the Knicks began to release more detail on his recovery. Late in November they said he had progressed to on court work with the trainers and was ramping up his activity. Reports noted that he was moving from basic shooting and mobility work into more intense drills that involved quick changes of direction.
Soon after, another update said he had been cleared for contact which is a key step before any player comes back to full games. He has taken part in practice sessions that include contact and short scrimmage segments so the staff can see how the hamstring holds up under real pressure.
One report from early December mentioned a target return date around a home game against the Orlando Magic which was framed as a goal for him and the team rather than a promise. That update stressed that the timeline could move if he felt any tightness or soreness as he increased his workload.
The Knicks have kept his official status tied to day to day medical checks instead of locking in a hard date which fits with how teams usually handle soft tissue injuries like this.
During this stretch Anunoby has missed a run of games across the schedule. New York has used other wings to cover his minutes on the perimeter with players such as Josh Hart carrying more defensive assignments against top scorers. Even with that help it is clear how much his presence matters because he brings size on defense plus reliable three point shooting on offense.
Before the injury he was giving the Knicks around 16 points with strong efficiency from the field and from deep which made him a clean fit next to their main ball handlers.
There is some concern because this is not the first time Anunoby has dealt with leg or soft tissue problems. His history includes previous hamstring issues so the medical staff is extra careful about any sign that this strain is not fully healed.
That is a big reason why every update mentions patience and no rush to throw him into heavy minutes the second he is cleared. The goal is to avoid a setback which could turn a short absence into something more serious over the season.
If his rehab continues to trend in the same direction he should re enter the rotation with some minute limits at first then build back to his normal workload if there are no problems. Once he is fully back he is expected to return to his usual role as a key two way wing guarding top perimeter players while spacing the floor on the other end.
For now the main points are that he has moved past the early rest phase, is doing contact work, and remains on track as long as the hamstring responds well.
