Sam Leavitt Injury Update: Arizona State QB Likely to Return Against Texas Tech

Sam Leavitt Injury Update

Sam Leavitt’s week just got a lot brighter, and so did every Arizona State fan’s. After sitting out last Saturday’s painful 42–10 loss to Utah, the sophomore quarterback looks set to return against Texas Tech this weekend. ESPN’s Pete Thamel said Leavitt’s officially “probable,” which might sound cautious, but if you’ve seen his practice clips from this week, he doesn’t look cautious at all. The arm’s crisp, the footwork quick, and the grin? Confident again.

On Twitter, @Commit2theFork reported that QB Sam Leavitt is listed as “probable” for the upcoming weekend game.

He’d been nursing a lower-body injury, something he first picked up in that Baylor game back in late September. For a couple of weeks, Leavitt’s been walking that fine line between rest and readiness. Last week, he was still rocking a walking boot, the kind of image that makes fans hold their breath, but by midweek, the boot was gone. On Wednesday, he was in full team reps, throwing a 30-yard dart to Demarius “Man Man” Robinson and celebrating like he hadn’t missed a beat. Kenny Dillingham, usually careful with injury talk, even cracked a smile and said, “I feel really good about where he’s at.” That’s coach-speak for “Yeah, he’s playing.”

On Twitter, @MaxZepedaSports reported that Kenny Dillingham commented on Sam Leavitt’s health after practice, saying: “There’s still two more days, but I feel really good about Sam and where he’s at.” via @CronkiteSports.

On Twitter, @Blakes_Take2 shared that Sam Leavitt is practicing without tape around his right foot, which is a positive sign for the Sun Devils’ QB1, per @FOX10Phoenix.

Stats-wise, Leavitt’s had a solid season: 1,039 yards, eight touchdowns, 63.1% completion rate. Not wild video game numbers, but steady,  the kind of stat line that keeps a team organized and defense guessing. Without him, ASU’s offense fell flat last week. Jeff Sims tried hard but looked like a guy pressed into a role he didn’t expect that soon. You could almost feel the team missing Leavitt’s command, that calm air, even when the pocket collapses.

Of course, there’s a risk coming back too soon that the Texas Tech defense doesn’t play gently. But when a quarterback smiles through drills and rips a 30-yard dime mid-practice, it’s hard not to get swept up. Maybe it’s the adrenaline, or maybe Leavitt’s just built that way: stubborn, competitive, maybe a little too fearless for his own good. And honestly? That’s exactly the kind of energy Arizona State needs right now.
