Shreyas Iyer Injury Update
Shreyas Iyer got hurt during the third ODI between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday. The Indian vice captain injured his left rib cage while fielding.
The incident happened in the 33rd over when Alex Carey miscued a shot. Iyer ran back from backward point and dived full stretch to complete the catch near deep third man. It was a brilliant effort, but he landed hard on his left side.
He stayed on the ground, holding his ribs in pain. The physio came in quickly. After brief treatment, Iyer left the field and did not return. Later, the BCCI said he was taken to a nearby hospital for scans and further evaluation.
This is the latest injury concern for India during the Australia tour. Nitish Reddy and Arshdeep Singh were already out due to fitness problems. Iyer’s injury adds to the pressure on the squad just a month before the South Africa series.
The team management has not yet confirmed how serious his injury is, but early signs suggest he will likely rest for the remainder of the match. Reports say he is not expected to bat in India’s chase.
Iyer was in good form in this series. He had scored a solid fifty in the previous ODI in Adelaide and looked confident with the bat. His absence could affect India’s middle order in upcoming games.
BCCI said in its statement that Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage and was taken to the hospital for further assessment. The team’s medical staff will monitor his progress closely. For now, the focus is on recovery and making sure there is no long-term damage.
The injury looked painful, but initial reports hint that the damage might be limited to bruising or muscle strain rather than a fracture. Doctors will confirm his status once scan results are out.
It ends another frustrating phase for Iyer, who has dealt with several fitness issues in recent years. He had earlier struggled with a back problem that kept him out of parts of last season.
India hopes he recovers soon, as they count on his experience for key home games ahead. The cricket board is likely to share another update once the medical team submits its full report on his condition.
