Sony's New PlayStation 27-inch Gaming Monitor First Look

Sony’s new PlayStation 27-inch gaming monitor sticks to the basics. It looks clean. The bezels are thin. The stand is solid and simple. The design fits a desktop but stands out with a neat built-in hook for charging a DualSense controller. Attach the controller when you’re done playing. The hook swings out from the side, no tools needed. You can also use it for a DualSense Edge.

The screen size is 27 inches. It’s Quad HD, so the resolution is 2560 x 1440 pixels. It uses an IPS panel, so colors look good from almost any angle. Sony chose QHD instead of 4K for this model. That means sharp visuals but not as high as 4K. At this size, the upgrade to 4K does not stand out much unless you sit close to the screen. The IPS panel also helps get brighter colors and steady images with little blur.

The refresh rate is a real highlight. On a PlayStation 5, you’ll get up to 120 hertz. That means fast gameplay feels smooth. On a PC, it can go up to 240 hertz, which is great for shooters or racing games. There is Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) for fewer tears and stutters. If your system supports it, every frame feels more fluid. The monitor has HDR with Auto HDR Tone Mapping. That means if you use it with a PS5, it will auto-adjust brightness and colors for games that support HDR.

It comes with two HDMI 2.1 ports. These work with PS5 or any new console. You also get one DisplayPort 1.4 for PC. There are two USB-A ports and a USB-C port for devices or adapters. The monitor has built-in stereo speakers and a headphone jack, so you don’t need extra speakers if you want simple sound. If your setup needs more flexibility, you can mount it on a wall with VESA support. No need for special gear. Everything plugs in from the back, so cables stay tidy.

Sony left out 4K. That will disappoint some. But at this size, 1440p is likely enough for most gamers who want higher refresh at a lower price. Sony also has not given official brightness numbers or details on response time. The first look only covers main features. Pricing is unknown. The monitor is due for release next year in the US and Japan. If the price lands near $300, it will have stiff competition. There are already 27-inch 1440p, 240Hz gaming monitors in stores today, some for less than $225.

The design is simple and PlayStation-themed. Every port and control is where you’d expect. The built-in DualSense hook is the only surprise, but it is useful for people who want a clean desk. Overall, this monitor is built for people who want a desktop screen that works well for PlayStation and PC. No drama, no extra flash. Just solid, simple design and features for gaming.
