Tarik Skubal Injury Update
Tarik Skubal a name that’s been penciled in on the Cy Young ballots of pretty much everyone with a pulse this season walked off the mound last night, clutching his left side. If you’re a Tigers fan, you probably felt your stomach drop. It was that sort of moment you dread every September, especially when your team is finally barreling toward the postseason with real swagger for the first time in, well, forever. Skubal had thrown just 45 pitches. Then, after an awkward finish to his delivery (honestly, it looked a bit off right away), he called over the trainer, chatted quickly with A.J. Hinch, and was out of the game fast as a summer thunderstorm. You know it’s serious when the pitcher himself pulls the ripcord, and Skubal doesn’t strike me as the type to ever leave his guys hanging unless it actually mattered.
The official word out of Detroit’s clubhouse? “Tightness” in his left side, near his ribcage the kind of diagnosis that’s about as specific as saying your car “won’t start.” ESPN’s Jeff Passan tweeted that Skubal is set for imaging on Saturday, which means the entire fanbase is probably spending their day Googling “oblique injuries recovery time” and not liking what they find. I’ve been there. High school ball, pulled my own side, and let’s just say sneezing became my mortal enemy for two weeks. Skubal’s situation is obviously way more high-stakes he’s got 222 strikeouts and an insane 2.10 ERA this year. If he misses the playoffs, Detroit’s outlook changes from “let’s dream big” to “oh, please, let us survive the Wild Card round.”
I watched the fourth with my old buddy Dave, the sort of Tigers lifer who can still recall Alan Trammell’s on-base percentage from ’84. When Skubal waved for the trainer, Dave just shook his head: “Oh, no. Not this kid. Man, we need him.” There are times when a single player being out really is a big deal, and this is one of them. The Tigers have a nice rotation, but nobody else on the staff has Skubal’s knack for dominating a game he makes it look easy, and that’s not something you replace with a waiver pickup.
The thing that really got folks talking after the game, though, was how Skubal seemed to handle it all. Afterward, he said he’d felt the tightness a bit during his warmup pitches in the fourth one of those weird little sensations pro athletes talk about but regular people only notice after they’ve completely thrown their back out moving furniture. Instead of trying to “tough it out,” as the old-school types say, he just walked. “Given the time of year,” Skubal said, “I didn’t want to risk an injury that could sideline me for an extended period.” If I’m being honest, that’s the sort of self-awareness you hope your ace has especially with October fast approaching and all those big, must-win games looming.
No surprise: Tigers manager Hinch played it cautious too. No heroic warm-up pitches, just straight to the dugout. Can’t blame him. Playoff hopes can shatter on nights like this, especially in a division race as tight as this year’s AL Central. Based on reports, Skubal’s spirits are (for now) holding up. He said he’s “certainly going to remain hopeful,” and it sounds like the initial physical checks weren’t alarming. But, just between us, Skubal’s also never really had this sort of side issue before, and obliques have a reputation for messing up even the best-laid postseason plans.

In the meantime, Tigers fans will keep refreshing Twitter, remembering all those seasons when luck was in short supply, and hoping this isn’t another rude twist.
