What to Expect in the Series Finale?
The series finale has a lot of ground to cover after the explosive events of Episode 9. With several major characters now gone, the final episode will likely focus on:
- June's Final Stand: After witnessing the plane explosion that took out multiple commanders, will June finally be able to bring down Gilead and rescue her daughter Hannah?
- The Future of Gilead: With a significant power vacuum created by the deaths of Commander Lawrence, Commander Wharton, Nick, and other high-ranking officials, Gilead faces an uncertain future.
- Setting Up The Testaments: The finale may include elements that set up the upcoming sequel series "The Testaments," which is also based on Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name.
- Closure for Surviving Characters: Fans can expect to see the fates of surviving characters like Serena Joy, Aunt Lydia, Moira, Luke, and Janine resolved in some way.
According to the show's creators, the finale will provide an "emotional and authentic" conclusion to June's story. Elisabeth Moss, who plays June and directed the final two episodes, has expressed hope that her character "gives courage to somebody who needs it" and serves as someone "people can hopefully look up to."

The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 9 Recap
The penultimate episode, titled "Execution," delivered some of the most shocking and pivotal moments of the entire series. Here's what happened:
The Aftermath of the Wedding Massacre
Episode 9 picked up immediately after the handmaids' rebellion at Serena and Commander Wharton's wedding, where they killed 37 commanders.
June, Moira, Janine, and the other handmaids attempted to escape to Canada but were captured by Gilead forces. June was separated from the group when she surrendered herself to save another handmaid.
Serena's Dilemma
Serena, now aware of the rebellion's scale, found herself caught between her new role as a commander's wife and her sympathy for the handmaids.
When Wharton revealed plans to transport her to safety, she refused to leave Boston, showing her growing independence.
The Execution That Wasn't
In a shocking public spectacle, June, Janine, Moira, Aunt Lydia, and the other handmaids were brought to the gallows for execution.
As nooses were placed around their necks, Mayday forces, led by Luke, launched a surprise attack, saving them at the last moment.
The Ultimate Sacrifice
In the episode's most dramatic turn, Commander Lawrence, working with Mayday, was tasked with planting a bomb on a plane carrying Gilead's remaining high commanders to Washington D.C.
When circumstances forced him to board the plane himself, his mission became a suicide mission.
Nick's Final Choice
In a surprising twist, Nick also boarded the plane, finally making his choice between Gilead and June. Before takeoff, he asked Lawrence if June was safe, showing his continued care for her despite his allegiance to Gilead.
The Explosive Ending
The episode concluded with June watching from a distance as the commanders' plane exploded in mid-air, killing Lawrence, Nick, Wharton, and the other commanders on board.
This powerful moment left June in tears, marking a significant victory for the resistance but at a tremendous personal cost.
This devastating yet victorious ending sets the stage for what promises to be an emotionally charged series finale, as the show prepares to conclude June's long and arduous journey through the nightmare of Gilead.
