What Is Tinder's Face Check? Tinder Launches Mandatory ‘Face Check’ for Safer, Verified Dating Experiences

What Is Tinder’s Face Check?

Tinder Face Check is a new video-based identity verification tool that requires users to record a live selfie so the app’s AI can confirm they're a real person and match their profile photos. Face Check is now mandatory for all new users in California, Canada, Colombia, India, and several European countries as of October 2025.

Tinder pushed this feature after reports of catfishing and fake profiles spiked in early 2024, with a 60% drop in bad actors reported since Face Check’s pilot launch. Evan, posting on X via @StockMKTNewz, shared that Match Group ($MTCH), which owns Tinder, will soon require all new users in the United States to verify their identity through a biometric video face scan.

How Tinder Face Check Actually Works?

  • When joining Tinder in a region with Face Check, you'll see a prompt to “Complete Face Check.”

  • You’re asked to record a short video selfie, moving your head in real-time while following simple instructions (“Look straight ahead,” “Turn your head slowly”).

  • The app uses AI and liveness-detection tech to scan for deepfakes and pre-recorded clips.

  • Your video is reviewed (often under 30 seconds, but manual checks can take up to 24 hours).

  • Verified profiles receive a “Photo Verified” badge.

  • If the system can’t confirm your identity, you can retry or contact support via the Tinder Help Center.

Is Face Check Mandatory or Optional?

Face Check is mandatory for new users in California, Canada, Colombia, India, and select EU countries as of October 22, 2025. The U.S. rollout began in late October and continues state by state. In these places, you can’t access core features like messaging until Face Check is complete.

In other regions (like much of the U.S.), it’s still optional but strongly encouraged. Tinder expects a global rollout by early 2026. Skip Face Check in a mandatory region? You’ll lose access to messages and may see profile visibility limited.

Why Tinder Added This Feature?

Tinder cites sharp increases in catfishing, bot scams, and identity fraud as drivers for launching Face Check. Scam complaints jumped 40% in 2024, according to their Q3 Safety Report. It’s also direct competition: Bumble added photo verification in 2022, and industry-wide safety demands from advocacy groups surged after several high-profile scams.

Face Check is part of Match Group’s broader push (across Hinge, Match.com, etc.) for video, ID, and AI-powered checks. Does this fix everything? Not entirely. It closes big holes, but fake photos on verified accounts and sophisticated scammers still slip through.
