Amber Davies: The Love Island champ turned West End leading lady. When they announced her, I nearly dropped my mug. She’s jumping in to replace Dani Dyer, who sadly had to drop out with an injury and if early rehearsals are anything to go by, Amber might be a dark horse.

Lewis Cope: Swapping Emmerdale drama for the cha-cha-cha. If his soap stints are anything to go by, expect some seriously theatrical storytelling on the dance floor.

Harry Aikines-Aryeetey: Sprint legend and Gladiators powerhouse. His ability to learn choreography at the speed of, well, himself, could make the judges nervous in a good way.

Alex Kingston: When she turns up, I think “Doctor Who,” not disco, but that only makes the potential for an iconic Viennese waltz all the more thrilling.

No need for pristine tables or exhaustive state-by-state breakdowns—just a slapdash celebration of personalities, both familiar and totally unexpected. In early rehearsals, you get a sense some of these folks have danced everywhere except the ballroom: weddings, rugby pitches, maybe even a West End afterparty. And now, the BBC throws them onto the shiniest floor in Britain.
Strictly has its signature quirks: shiny outfits, emotional judges, and those wild group dances that prompt everyone at home to declare, “I could do better than that.” (You probably can’t, but isn’t it nice to pretend?)
Tonight there’s no elimination. All sparkle, no heartbreak. Which is nice, because in week one, nobody wants to see someone get sent home after tripping on a confetti streamer. That’s a lesson I learned the hard way at my cousin’s wedding, incidentally. So tonight, all the hopefuls will be trying to impress, not survive. Who’s going to be the fan favourite and who’s destined for the “I’ll try anything once” category? It’s anyone’s guess.
