WhatsApp New Update
WhatsApp is finally getting ready to change the game with its upcoming “third-party chats” feature in Europe, spotted recently in WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.25.33.8 by WABetainfo. The feature is Meta’s move to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which pushes big tech “gatekeepers” like Meta to open up their services for fair competition.
In simple terms, WhatsApp users will soon be able to send messages to people on other messaging apps, no matter if they’re using WhatsApp or not. WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) reported on X that WhatsApp has launched third-party chats integration in the European region as part of this week's news.
According to the report, some beta users are already seeing the option appear under Settings > Account > Third-party chats. Once turned on, users can chat with friends from other platforms, share photos, videos, voice messages, and even documents just like regular WhatsApp chats.
The only app currently supported is BirdyChat, but more are expected soon as third-party developers work on integrations and meet WhatsApp’s strict security and encryption standards. That means no shortcuts, your conversations stay protected.
Users will be able to manage these new chats their way, either mixing them into a combined inbox or keeping them separate. Notifications, media quality, and other preferences can all be customized. However, some signature WhatsApp features like status updates, stickers, and disappearing messages might not work in these third-party conversations.
Also, a slightly awkward twist, people blocked on WhatsApp might still be able to reach out through other supported apps. It’s still early days, but this could mark one of WhatsApp’s biggest changes ever. And yes, don’t be surprised if familiar platforms like ChatGPT soon show up on that integration list, especially with its new Group Chats feature already mimicking WhatsApp’s style.
