Will There be a Knives Out 4?
After Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery releases, the original two‑film deal with Netflix is complete, and there is no announced contract for a fourth movie. Johnson has said he currently has no concrete story or script for a new sequel and that there is “nothing planned” yet in terms of a developed idea.
At the same time, Johnson has repeatedly expressed that he would love to keep making Benoit Blanc mysteries as long as he and Craig are still having fun and audiences stay interested. Daniel Craig has also indicated he is keen to return, seeing the series as open‑ended rather than a closed trilogy.
Creative and Rights Situation
One key reason a fourth film is likely rather than certain is that Johnson and his producing partner Ram Bergman still control the franchise rights now that the Netflix deal has ended. The first Knives Out was produced independently and then sold to a distributor, so the team could follow a similar path again: develop the film on their own and partner with a studio or streamer later.
Johnson is also very protective of the series creatively, insisting that each film must originate from his own fresh idea instead of treating Benoit Blanc as a formulaic “IP machine.” He has said he will only continue if he feels he can deliver a distinct new mystery with its own tone, ensemble, and theme each time.
Possible Release Window
Looking at the pattern so far, Knives Out debuted in 2019, Glass Onion in 2022, and Wake Up Dead Man in December 2025, which roughly sets up three‑year gaps between entries. Industry estimates suggest that from a finished script to release can easily take around 18 months, even before considering casting and deal‑making.
Because Johnson has said he wants to make an original movie next and does not have a fourth Knives Out plotted yet, work on a sequel would likely start later in the decade. If he lands on an idea and moves forward in the next couple of years, a realistic expectation for Knives Out 4 would be somewhere around the late 2020s rather than the immediate future.
What a Fourth Film Might Look Like
If another entry happens, certain elements are very likely. Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, would almost certainly return, as both the actor and director see him as the anchor of the franchise. Around him, Johnson has emphasized his preference for brand‑new ensemble casts and standalone mysteries, rather than re‑assembling old supporting characters.
Fans have pitched wild ideas, including a Muppets crossover, but Johnson has specifically ruled out a Knives Out film where Blanc solves a case among Muppets, even though he is open to making a separate, traditional Muppet movie someday. Any future Blanc case is therefore more likely to follow the established formula: an all‑star cast, a fresh setting, and a twisty puzzle that reflects contemporary themes.
