The Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max were officially launched on September 25, 2025, with the first sales beginning on September 27, 2025, at 10:00 AM through Mi.com and official Xiaomi retailers. The global unveiling took place in China during Xiaomi’s fall product event, and both models debuted alongside the standard Xiaomi 17, marking another high-profile entry in the flagship smartphone market.

Let’s talk price first, because that’s what most want to know upfront. The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max starts in China at ¥5,999 (about ₹74,700 or $840), and the 17 Pro at ¥4,999 (about ₹62,000). Both come in various RAM and storage configurations, topping out with a monster 1TB variant if you just can’t delete those photos. Still no India release date, but if you’re used to Xiaomi’s rollouts, it should land here soon hopefully before Diwali, because there’s a part of me that wants to try night shots of sparklers with that Leica camera setup. Yes, I am that person at family gatherings.

When it comes to design, honestly, both phones feel like they belong in a sci-fi movie not just because of the shiny back, but because the secondary screen on the rear is actually useful. I always find rear displays a bit gimmicky, but this one? High-res, bright, seamlessly baked into the look, and it does more than just show time or act as a glorified notifications ticker. Imagine framing the perfect ultra-wide selfie using the “real” camera, or quickly scribbling a note without flipping the phone. It’s more engaging than I expected.

Specs-wise, both models are absolute flagships. The 17 Pro rocks a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED (1.5K, crazy bright, 120Hz refresh), while the Pro Max stretches things to a cool 6.9 inches at 2K, also with a super-bright 120Hz display. Both get Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 power (so, performance is never a worry), up to 16GB RAM, top-speed LPDDR5x, and storage options up to 1TB. But it’s the battery that really blows the socks off: 6,300mAh for the 17 Pro and a whopping 7,500mAh for the Pro Max. Not only that, but both support 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. I’ve been known to kill my battery on road trips with a couple hours of navigation and photo-snapping, so this feels like deliverance.

The cameras are where Xiaomi flexes its partnership with Leica. Both models have this triple 50MP setup on the back main, ultrawide, and a periscope telephoto lens, with optical zoom up to 5x. The color science is pure Leica: sometimes dramatic, sometimes soft, always feeling a bit “premium.” The Pro Max leans into that with a bigger periscope sensor and slightly better low-light handling. The selfie shooter up front is also 50MP, which while it sounds wild on paper delivers crisp results even in bad lighting. Personally, I’m eager to test their portrait AI on an actual bad-hair day.

Water and dust resistance? Both phones go IP69, with the Pro Max even designed to survive a deeper dunk (not that I’d voluntarily risk my phone at the pool, but accidents happen). Design details like the smooth, almost jewel-like finish in fun colors (hello, purple and green) and the slim 8mm body make these feel more manageable in the hand than the size suggests, though if you’ve got tiny pockets, the Pro Max is going to be a squeeze.

There’s also HyperOS 3 running on Android 16, Xiaomi’s latest spin on Android. It’s got a speedy, bouncy UI and neat features like HyperIsland (yeah, that’s very much inspired by Apple’s Dynamic Island) and plenty of quality-of-life tweaks. If you’re coming from an older Xiaomi, it feels fresh but not alien.

To wrap up this ramble: the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max are genuinely interesting, even a little bit bold in places where the phone market has gotten “safe.” Dual displays, battery tech, that quirky camera bar there’s character here, not just specs. I’d call that a win, even if it means my old phone suddenly looks a couple years older.
