Government jobs are still the most contested career track in India. A single Group C govt job vacancy at a railway zone or a state police board routinely draws lakhs of applications, and the reasons haven't changed in a decade: pay protected by a Pay Commission, a pension, and job security that almost no private employer matches.

This page is FreeJobAlert's all-India hub for central government jobs - UPSC, SSC, RRB, IBPS, PSU, defence and central department recruitment. Every govt job notification in the tables above is added the same day the official advertisement is published, with the post count, qualification, advertisement number and closing date taken straight from the notification PDF. For state-level openings, use State Government Jobs. For everything published across both today, see Latest Notifications.

Types of Government Jobs in India

Central Government Jobs

Central government jobs are filled by national recruitment bodies and cover posts in every Union ministry, PSU, autonomous body and central armed police force. The main recruiters:

  • UPSC - Civil Services (IAS, IPS, IFS), Engineering Services, CDS, NDA, CAPF (AC), Combined Medical Services and Combined Geo-Scientist.
  • SSC - CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD Constable, Stenographer, JE and Selection Posts. By volume, SSC is the single largest recruiter for graduate and 12th-pass office jobs.
  • PSUs - IOCL, HPCL, BHEL, ONGC, SAIL, NTPC, GAIL and others. Most recruit executives through GATE scores and non-executives through their own trade tests and apprenticeships.
  • Central departments and institutions - India Post, AIIMS, ISRO, DRDO, CSIR laboratories, IITs, IIMs and the High Courts.

Because these are all-India cadres, a central govt job vacancy is open to candidates from any state, subject only to the age and qualification rules in the notification. That is the practical difference from state recruitment, which usually carries a domicile or local-language condition.

State Government Jobs

Every state runs its own Public Service Commission plus a subordinate services board. Between them they recruit for administrative services (Group 1, 2 and 4), state police, forest and revenue services, and teaching posts in state colleges. Active commissions include APPSC, BPSC, MPPSC, RPSC, MPSC, GPSC, HPPSC, TNPSC, KPSC and UKPSC, alongside boards such as UPSSSC, RSSB, PSSSB, KEA, JSSC and OSSSC.

Browse all state government jobs, or go straight to your state: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Gujarat.

Bank Jobs

IBPS conducts the common recruitment process for public sector banks other than SBI, which runs its own exams; RBI recruits separately for Grade B officers, Assistants and Junior Engineers. The three entry routes are Clerk, Probationary Officer and Specialist Officer the SO stream being the one that takes IT, agriculture, law, HR and marketing specialists directly. Current openings: Bank Jobs.

Railway Jobs

Indian Railways is the largest single government employer in the country. Recruitment runs through the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB) for Assistant Loco Pilot, Technician, NTPC and Junior Engineer, and through the Railway Recruitment Cells (RRC) of each zone for Group D and apprentice posts. RRB cycles are large and infrequent, so a single notification can carry tens of thousands of vacancies. See Railway Jobs.

Police and Defence Jobs

This covers Agniveer entry into the Army, Navy and Air Force, officer entry through UPSC's CDS and NDA, the central armed police forces (BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB) recruited via SSC GD and UPSC CAPF, and state constable and sub-inspector drives run by boards such as BPSSC, UP Police and HPPSC. See Police and Defence Jobs.

Teaching, Engineering and Other Streams

Teaching posts range from TET-qualified primary teachers in state schools to Assistant Professor positions requiring UGC NET or a Ph.D. see Teaching Jobs. Diploma and B.E./B.Tech holders should also check Engineering Jobs. Specialised streams have their own pages: Anganwadi Recruitment, Forest Department Jobs, Legal Govt Jobs and Female Govt Jobs.

Govt Job Vacancy 2026: Who Can Apply

There is a government job vacancy at almost every qualification level, from 8th pass to doctorate. Browse by what you already hold:

On age: most central government jobs set an upper limit between 27 and 32 for unreserved candidates, with the standard relaxations of 3 years for OBC-NCL, 5 years for SC/ST and 10 years for PwBD, applied over and above the category relaxation. Ex-servicemen have a separate formula. Two things trip candidates up every cycle eligibility is judged as on the cut-off date printed in the notification, not the date you apply; and the OBC certificate must carry the non-creamy-layer clause and be current. Check Eligibility for post-wise detail.

How to Apply for a Government Job Vacancy

Applying is procedural, not difficult but it is not casual. There is no regular central or state government post that you can get by emailing a CV. Every one is filled through an advertised vacancy and a prescribed selection process. The sequence:

  1. Read the full notification PDF, not the summary. Vacancy break-up, reservation, cut-off date and post preference all live there.
  2. Verify eligibility as on the cut-off date for age, qualification and category certificates.
  3. Complete the One Time Registration on the recruiting body's portal. SSC, UPSC and RRB all use OTR you register once and reuse it for every subsequent govt job notification from that body.
  4. Upload photo and signature to the exact specification. Wrong dimensions or file size is the single most common cause of rejected applications.
  5. Pay the fee. Most central posts waive it entirely for SC/ST, PwBD, ex-servicemen and women candidates.
  6. Submit before the deadline and save the confirmation page. Servers routinely fail on the last day; do not plan for it.
  7. Download the admit card when the window opens see Admit Card.
  8. After the exam, check the Answer Key and raise objections inside the challenge window, then track your Result and Cut-off Marks.

Closing soon? Last Date Reminder lists every application window about to shut.

Selection Process for Govt Jobs

One widely repeated myth is worth correcting: for most government jobs, the interview does not exist. Acting on a Department of Personnel and Training decision, interviews were discontinued with effect from 1 January 2016 for all Group B (non-gazetted), Group C and equivalent posts across Government of India ministries, departments, attached and subordinate offices, autonomous bodies and PSUs. A department that wants to retain an interview for a specific post has to seek DoPT clearance. Most states and all Union Territories have adopted the same rule for their own junior-level recruitment.

So for the large majority of vacancies listed on this page, selection is decided by written marks and any prescribed skill or physical test nothing else. A typical path runs: computer-based Tier 1, then Tier 2, then a skill test (typing, stenography) or PET/PST for uniformed posts, then document verification, then medical examination, then the final merit list.

Interviews still apply where the post is Group A or equivalent the UPSC Civil Services personality test, IBPS and SBI Probationary Officer, RBI Grade B, and faculty and scientist recruitment. Prepare with Selection Process, Exam Pattern, Syllabus and Previous Papers.

Government Job Salary and Benefits in 2026

Central government pay is set by the 7th Pay Commission matrix, which remains in force. Entry basic pay is ₹18,000 at Level 1 (MTS, Group D), ₹25,500 at Level 4 (constable, LDC), ₹35,400 at Level 6 (SSC CGL Inspector grade), ₹44,900 at Level 7 and ₹56,100 at Level 10 (Group A entry). On top of basic pay sit Dearness Allowance currently 60% of basic, effective 1 January 2026, and revised every January and July plus House Rent Allowance graded by X, Y and Z city class, and Transport Allowance.

On the 8th Pay Commission: it was constituted by gazette notification on 3 November 2025 with 1 January 2026 as the reference date, and as of mid-2026 it is still in its data-collection and stakeholder-consultation phase. No fitment factor, revised pay matrix or pension formula has been finalised or approved. The minimum-pay figures circulating online are union demands and media projections, not decisions. Going by the 7th CPC precedent, revised pay is likely to be notified later, with arrears paid back to the reference date.

Beyond pay, the real benefits are: pension cover employees who joined on or after 1 January 2004 come under NPS, with the Unified Pension Scheme available as an option for central government employees since April 2025; medical cover through CGHS or departmental schemes; and a statutory leave entitlement covering earned leave, casual leave, half-pay leave, maternity and paternity leave, and child care leave for eligible employees.

What government jobs do not offer is flexible hours. Central government offices work fixed timings on a five-day week, and field posts in railways, police, defence and hospitals work rostered shifts including nights and public holidays. The benefit is predictability and protected leave, not the freedom to set your own schedule.

How to Track Every Govt Job Notification

New vacancies are published every single day across roughly a hundred central and state recruiting bodies, and application windows are often only 21 to 30 days. Missing one usually means waiting a full cycle. The reliable way to keep up:

FreeJobAlert.com has run continuously since 2011 and is used by more than a crore job seekers a month. Every listing on this page is sourced from the official advertisement, and it is free - there is no subscription and no charge for any alert.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which government bodies recruit the most people in India?

By vacancy volume, the largest recruiters are Indian Railways through the RRBs and RRCs, the Staff Selection Commission, state police recruitment boards, state subordinate services boards, and public sector banks through IBPS and SBI. UPSC Civil Services is the most visible route but fills roughly a thousand posts a year a fraction of the total.

Is there an interview for central government jobs?

Not for most of them. Interviews were discontinued from 1 January 2016 for Group B (non-gazetted), Group C and equivalent posts across the Government of India; selection is on written test marks plus any prescribed skill or physical test. Interviews remain for Group A and equivalent recruitment such as UPSC Civil Services, bank PO, RBI Grade B and faculty posts.

Can I get a govt job without an exam?

Only through a few defined routes sports quota, compassionate appointment, apprenticeships, and certain walk-in contractual medical and faculty posts assessed on qualification and experience. Even these require an advertised vacancy, an application and document verification. No regular post is filled on a CV alone. See Govt Jobs Without Exams.

What is the minimum qualification for a government job?

8th pass. Posts at that level exist in anganwadi services, municipal bodies and as helper and peon roles. The volume of vacancies rises sharply at 10th pass and 12th pass level.

How much does a central government job pay in 2026?

Entry basic pay under the 7th Pay Commission matrix runs from ₹18,000 at Level 1 to ₹56,100 at Level 10, plus 60% DA, HRA by city class and transport allowance. The 8th Pay Commission is still in consultation and has not finalised any revised figures, so no confirmed 2026 pay scale exists yet.

What is the age limit for a govt job vacancy?

The lower limit is generally 18. The upper limit for unreserved candidates is usually between 27 and 32 depending on the post, with 3 years relaxation for OBC-NCL, 5 for SC/ST and 10 for PwBD over and above that. The exact limit and the cut-off date are always stated in the notification.
