World Bank raises India's FY27 growth forecast to 7.1%

The World Bank raised India's GDP growth forecast for FY27 (2026–27) to 7.1%, from 6.6% in its April projection, citing resilient domestic demand, private consumption, exports, industry and services, following 7.8% growth in Q1 FY27.

How the forecasts compare

  • RBI (7 October): 7.1% (up from 6.6%).
  • OECD (late September): 7.1% (up from 6.3%).
  • Moody's (September): 7% (up from 6%).
  • Ministry of Finance nowcast for Q2 FY27: 7.3%.

RBI's first rate hike since 2023: what it means

The Monetary Policy Committee, led by Governor Sanjay Malhotra, unanimously raised the repo rate by 25 bps to 5.50% on 7 October 2026 – the first increase since February 2023 – and changed the stance from neutral to 'calibrated tightening'.

  • Projections: FY27 GDP growth 7.1% (Q2: 7.2%, Q3: 6.9%); headline CPI inflation averaging almost 5.8% over the next three quarters; core inflation 4.4% for FY27.
  • Impact: loans linked to the repo rate (external-benchmark-linked floating-rate loans) will see EMIs or tenures adjust at their next reset, and deposit rates may firm up. Markets reacted through today's session.
  • The RBI also flagged elevated valuations of AI-related assets as a key global downside risk.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics on 6 October 2026 to Francis Halzen (University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA), "for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin."

  • Halzen, born in 1944 in Tienen, Belgium, is a Belgian-American particle physicist. His idea was to use glacial ice at the South Pole to capture neutrinos, the near-massless "ghost particles" that rarely interact with matter.
  • The IceCube Neutrino Observatory tracks neutrinos arriving from the distant cosmos and has laid the foundation for neutrino astronomy.
  • Prize amount: 12 million Swedish kronor (about USD 1.2 million).

2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry: Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai for asymmetric synthesis

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was announced on 7 October 2026, awarded to Henri B. Kagan (France; Université Paris-Sud/Paris-Saclay) and Kenso Soai (Japan; Tokyo University of Science) "for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis."

  • Their work explains how homochirality – molecules of one "mirror-image" form dominating – can emerge spontaneously, a puzzle more than a century old. Kagan found non-linear effects in 1986; Soai designed the first reaction (the Soai reaction) in which only one mirror image forms.
  • Important for pharmaceutical manufacturing, where the correct mirror image of a drug molecule matters. Committee chair: Heiner Linke.
  • Kagan (born 1930, aged 95) and Soai (born 1950, aged 76) share the 12 million Swedish kronor prize equally.

Rest of Nobel Week
