The National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), released the First Advance Estimate of GDP growth for Q2 FY2026-27 (July–September 2026) at 7.4% (year-on-year, at constant 2011-12 prices) - up from 7.1% in Q1 - driven by strong manufacturing output (10.3% GVA growth), buoyant construction activity (9.1%), and a resilient services sector (8.4%), even as agricultural GVA moderated to 3.4% due to uneven monsoon distribution in Central India.

Global Innovation Index 2026: India ranked 39th, retains top spot among lower-middle-income economies

WIPO released the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2026 on 10 October 2026. India ranked 39th among 132 economies - up from 40th in 2025 and 81st in 2015 - retaining its position as the top innovative lower-middle-income economy for the 5th consecutive year and the top innovative economy in Central and Southern Asia. Switzerland topped the index for the 16th consecutive year.

Lok Sabha passes Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2026 - One Nation One Election

The Lok Sabha on 9 October 2026 passed the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2026 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 - the twin legislative pillars of the One Nation One Election (ONOE) initiative - by the required two-thirds majority after 12 hours of debate. The bills aim to synchronise Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections from 2029 onwards, followed by simultaneous Local Body elections within 100 days.

Exam note: The High-Level Committee on ONOE was chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind and submitted its report on 14 March 2024. Constitutional amendments required touch Articles 83, 85, 172, 174, and 356. The bills must now be passed by the Rajya Sabha and ratified by at least 15 state legislatures before becoming law.

India’s CPI Inflation for September 2026 drops to 3.2% - lowest since January 2019

India’s retail inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September 2026 fell sharply to 3.2% (year-on-year) - the lowest since January 2019 - as per data released by MoSPI on 10 October 2026. Nobel Peace Prize 2026: IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency)

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on 9 October 2026 in Oslo that the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - “for its indispensable role in verifying the world’s nuclear commitments, preventing nuclear proliferation, and promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy at a moment of heightened global nuclear risk.”

Rajnath Singh launches Navy’s first indigenous Fleet Support Ship FSS-1 ‘Surya’ at HSL, Visakhapatnam

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched FSS-1, named ‘Surya’ - the Indian Navy’s first indigenously built Fleet Support Ship - at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam, on 6 October 2026. He also laid the keel of FSS-5 and inaugurated an upgraded slipway at the shipyard capable of building and launching vessels of up to 45,000 DWT.

  • Programme: Five Fleet Support Ships under a contract worth approximately ₹19,000 crore signed in August 2023; built by HSL (Visakhapatnam) and L&T’s Kattupalli yard (Chennai).

The ship will sail to India via the Suez Canal to join the Western Naval Command, Mumbai.

The India–UAE joint military exercise Mountain Guardian 2026 (3rd edition) is under way at the Foreign Training Node, Chaubatia, Uttarakhand (5–18 October 2026). A total of 92 personnel - 46 from each side - are participating: a Bhairav Battalion of the Indian Army and a Mountain Infantry Battalion of the UAE Land Forces.
