2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded for discovering optogenetics

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to Karl Deisseroth (Stanford University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, USA), Peter Hegemann (Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany) and Georg Nagel (University of Würzburg, Germany), "for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics."

Key details

  • Optogenetics is a technique that makes it possible to switch the activity of individual nerve cells on or off using light, allowing scientists to study how nerve cells shape memories, feelings and behaviours in the living brain.
  • The underlying discoveries trace to light-sensitive proteins in algae, which Deisseroth transformed into a light-controlled switch for nerve cells; the work is now used in laboratories worldwide to study brain circuits.
  • Prize amount: 12 million Swedish kronor (about USD 1.2 million), shared equally among the three laureates.
  • This is the 2026 Prize announcement that traditionally opens Nobel Week, with physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics prizes following through the week.

India demonstrates its first free-space Quantum Key Distribution link over 5.56 km

QNu Labs, in collaboration with the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N) and IIT Gandhinagar, successfully demonstrated India's first free-space Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) link spanning 5.56 km, in a field trial conducted on the night of 27–28 September 2026.

Key details

  • Established a secure quantum communication channel between BISAG-N and IIT Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  • Used QNu Labs' hardware-based Armos QKD device over free-space optical channels, with its Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking (PAT) system maintaining alignment across the open-air path.
  • Achieved a Quantum Bit Error Rate below 5% and generated secure keys at 230–260 bits per second.
  • Keys were integrated with BISAG-N's post-quantum cryptography platform Vedic Kavach, enabling end-to-end encrypted test messaging.
  • Significance: free-space QKD avoids the need for fibre-optic infrastructure and is considered a foundational step toward satellite-based quantum communication; QNu Labs (founded 2016) is a Bengaluru-based pioneer in India's sovereign quantum-security technology.

India's Akash air defence system reaches Turkmenistan, joining Armenia and Tajikistan as export customers

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed that India's indigenous Akash air defence system, developed by DRDO, has been exported to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, joining Armenia as the system's three confirmed overseas customers – and giving India a foothold in the Central Asian defence market.

Key details

  • Akash is designed to track and engage multiple aerial targets – fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, guided munitions and UAVs – at short to medium ranges, using passive and active radars.
  • Production partners: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
  • Both Tajikistan and Turkmenistan currently rely on ageing Soviet/Russian-era and Chinese air-defence systems; Akash is expected to serve a mid-layer role in Turkmenistan's air-defence architecture.
  • The system's combat performance during Operation Sindoor (May 2025), where it helped foil Pakistani drone and missile attacks, has bolstered its export credibility; Armenia is separately evaluating the next-generation Akash-NG variant.
  • India's overall defence exports crossed Rs. 38,000 crore in FY 2025–26, with Akash joining BrahMos, Pinaka and Astra among India's successful indigenous export products.
