How to Apply for IIT Madras Ph.D and MS January 2027
- Read the Research Admission Brochure (January 2027) fully, including the eligibility clauses for your department.
- Open the official research admission portal at research.iitm.ac.in.
- Complete the online application form for the programme and department you are eligible for. No downloadable forms are available.
- Pay the application fee as applicable to your category.
- Submit the form on or before 30 October 2026, 5:00 p.m.
- Take a printout of your application and keep it for your records. You will need it at the interview.
- Watch the admission website and your department's website for shortlisting updates, test or interview schedules and results.
Important Instructions for Candidates
- Fill the form only after reading the brochure. Shortlisted candidates must submit a soft copy of the online application with relevant certificates and documents.
- Upload a current OBC-NCL or EWS certificate issued after 1 April 2026 in the online application.
- External category applicants must submit an NOC and/or sponsorship certificate with the application, and a one-page write-up about the research topic.
- Candidates must produce the qualifying degree certificate within three months from registration, on or before 31 March for January admission.
- Departments may follow different test and interview schedules. Check the department website you applied to.
- Foreign nationals can register only as full-time scholars. If the medium of instruction for the qualifying degree was not English, the brochure asks for IELTS (minimum 6.5 overall) or TOEFL (minimum 80 overall). Applicants to Management Studies must have a valid GMAT score.
