Eligibility Criteria
- Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel:
- Practice in criminal law for at least 10 years.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent understanding of criminal law and ethical duties of defence counsel.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently with others and lead the team.
- Must have handled at least 30 criminal trials in Sessions Courts (relaxable in appropriate circumstances).
- Knowledge of computer system preferable and capacity to manage the office.
- Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel:
- Practice in criminal law for at least 7 years.
- Excellent understanding of criminal law and oral and written communication skills.
- Skill in legal research and understanding of ethical duties of defence counsel.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently with others.
- Must have handled at least 20 criminal trials in Sessions Courts (may be relaxed in exceptional circumstances).
- IT knowledge with proficiency in work.
- Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel:
- Practice in criminal law from 0 to 3 years.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Thorough understanding of ethical duties of defence counsel.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently with others.
- Excellent writing and research skills.
- IT knowledge with high proficiency in work.
- Note: Qualifications may be reasonably relaxed in case of exceptional candidates or circumstances with approval of Executive Chairman, SLSA.
Salary / Stipend
- Honorarium (Retainership fee) for Class-A towns (population more than 10 lakhs):
- Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel: ₹ 70,000 to ₹ 1,00,000 per month.
- Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel: ₹ 50,000 to ₹ 75,000 per month (each).
- Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel: ₹ 25,000 to ₹ 45,000 per month (each).
- Honorarium for Class-B towns (population more than 2 lakhs but below 10 lakhs):
- Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel: ₹ 65,000 to ₹ 80,000 per month.
- Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel: ₹ 40,000 to ₹ 60,000 per month (each).
- Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel: ₹ 20,000 to ₹ 35,000 per month (each).
- Honorarium for Class-C towns (population below 2 lakhs) or rest of the towns:
- Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel: ₹ 60,000 to ₹ 70,000 per month.
- Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel: ₹ 30,000 to ₹ 50,000 per month (each).
- Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel: ₹ 20,000 to ₹ 30,000 per month (each).

Selection Process
- Applications will be invited after due publicity and a fair, transparent and competitive selection process shall be adopted by DLSA under guidance of SLSA.
- Legal Aid Defense Counsels shall be engaged on contract basis initially for two years with provision of yearly extension on satisfactory performance.
- Performance of each human resource shall be assessed every six months by SLSA in consultation with concerned DLSA.
- Selection of Chief, Deputy Chief and Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsels will be purely based on merit considering knowledge, skills, practice and experience.
- Selection committee will be chaired by Principal District & Sessions Judge (Chairman, DLSA) with at least three senior judicial officers dealing mainly with criminal cases; final approval by Executive Chairman, SLSA.
- After approval, engagement contract will be executed between Secretary, DLSA and the selected candidate.
- Services of any counsel can be terminated without prior notice on grounds mentioned in the guidelines (breach of duty, pecuniary gain from legal aid seekers, conviction, political activity, unsatisfactory performance, etc.).
General Information / Instructions
- Legal Aid Defense Counsel Offices deal exclusively with legal aided criminal matters from pre-arrest stage to appeal, including jail visits; panel lawyer system continues for civil matters and complainant cases.
- Lawyers engaged as LADC will not be allowed to take any other private cases or retainership.
- Personnel must follow prescribed Code of Ethics, including no conflict of interest, no disclosure of confidential information, no outside practice, and no acceptance of gifts or advantages.
- Legal Aid Defense Counsel shall devote full time to LADC duties and not engage in private practice during term of employment.
- Applications received after due date or sent to Rajasthan SLSA instead of the concerned DLSA will not be considered.
- Applying for engagement as LADC does not create any right or assurance of selection.
How to Apply
- Download the Scheme of engagement along with Application Form (Performa) from the official website of SLSA or from the Notice Board of concerned DLSA.
- Fill the Application Form for Chief/Deputy/Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel with recent passport size photo and required details.
- Submit duly filled Application Form along with self-attested copies of required documents to the concerned DLSA through Speed Post or personally in the office of the Secretary, DLSA so as to reach on or before 23.01.2026, 17.00 Hrs.
- No application should be sent to the office of Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority; all applications must be sent only to the Secretary of the concerned DLSA.
