APPSC Selection Process 2026

The selection process under the Common Combined Examination Scheme, 2026 involves the following stages:

  1. Recruitment Test/Preliminary Examination: As per Rule 4 of the Scheme, this stage is conducted only if the number of applicants exceeds the requisite ratio fixed for the written examination. It is used solely to shortlist candidates for the written examination.
  2. Written Examination: Comprises three papers - General English & General Studies (Objective, 150 marks), Concerned Subject Paper-I (Descriptive, 150 marks), and Concerned Subject Paper-II (Descriptive, 150 marks).
  3. Viva Voce Test: Carries 50 marks and is the final stage before preparation of the merit list.

The final merit is prepared out of a total of 500 marks (written examination + viva voce). The notification does not specify separate weightage percentages for each stage beyond the marks shown above.

APPSC Exam Pattern 2026

Written Examination Pattern

Paper Type Maximum Marks
General English & General Studies Objective 150
Concerned Subject - Paper I Descriptive 150
Concerned Subject - Paper II Descriptive 150
Viva Voce Test - 50
Total   500

The official notification does not specify the number of questions, exam duration, or negative marking rule for any of these papers - candidates should check the detailed admit card/exam instructions once released.

APPSC Syllabus 2026

APPSC has released the detailed syllabus only for the General Paper (Objective), which carries 150 marks. The syllabus for the Concerned Subject Papers I and II (Descriptive) is post-specific and has not been detailed in this notification.

1. General English

  • Fundamental language skills
  • Grammar rules
  • Vocabulary skills
  • Reading and comprehension

2. General Studies

This section tests a candidate’s general awareness of the surrounding environment and its implications for society, at the level expected of an educated person without specialised study. It includes:

  • Current affairs and recent developments
  • Day-to-day pragmatic observations and matters of importance
  • Science and technology
  • General awareness related to International, National, and North-East India affairs

3. Concerned Subject - Paper I & Paper II

Not specified in the official notification. These descriptive papers are specific to the post applied for (for example, Agriculture, Horticulture, Veterinary Science, Finance & Accounts, Law, etc.) and will be finalised by APPSC in consultation with the respective departments, as per Rule 5 of the Scheme.

How to Prepare for the APPSC Exam 2026

  • Start with the General English basics - grammar rules, vocabulary building, and comprehension practice - since this is a fixed, objective-type section common to all posts.
  • Build a daily current affairs habit covering national, international, and North-East India developments, as this is explicitly part of the General Studies syllabus.
  • Track recent developments in science and technology separately, since the notification calls this out as a specific focus area.
  • For the Concerned Subject papers, refer to your post-specific department syllabus once APPSC publishes it, rather than assuming it will match another post's syllabus.
  • Since the written exam and viva voce together determine the final 500-mark merit list, prepare for the interview stage alongside the written papers, not only after clearing them.
  • Keep checking the official APPSC website for the post-specific descriptive syllabus and any admit card details on exam duration, question count, or negative marking, since these are not yet specified.
