India – National Affairs
Supreme Court: internet access is a fundamental right, including for children
In a 136-page judgment on 15 October 2026 (Just Rights for Children Alliance v. S. Harish, 2026 INSC 1149), a bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran held that the right to access and use the internet is a fundamental right of every individual, children included, under Article 21 read with Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution.
- The Court rejected blanket age-based bans on children's internet and social media access as disproportionate, saying safeguards should target harmful content and those who circulate it, not the children exposed to it. It observed that children do not stop using the internet merely because law prohibits it, and that bans can push them to unregulated sites.
- It suggested age-appropriate safeguards based on parental consent and guidance, and placed responsibility for online child safety on platforms, regulators and law enforcement.
- It built on a 2025 judgment that recognised digital access as part of the right to life under Article 21 for persons with disabilities, which had left open whether internet access is a standalone fundamental right.
Global Hunger Index 2026: India ranked 100th of 122 countries
The Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2026, released on 14 October (ahead of World Food Day) by Welthungerhilfe, Concern Worldwide and Helvetas under the theme "No Security Without Food Security", ranks India 100th out of 122 countries with a score of 24.1, in the 'serious' category and tied with Ethiopia.
- Indicators: undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting and under-five mortality. India's child stunting is 29.3% (down from 50% in 2000); child wasting is nearly 19%, reported as the highest in South Asia.
- Trend and comparison: India's score has fallen from 37.0 in 2006 and 25.8 in 2018. The global GHI score is 18.1 and the South Asian average 23.5. Pakistan ranks 106th (25.5) and Afghanistan scores 28.6. India was 102nd of 123 in 2025.
- The Indian government has in past years rejected the index's methodology, citing the Poshan Tracker data and arguing that stunting and child mortality reflect factors such as sanitation and health, not hunger alone.

- The MEA said the talks would cover energy, trade and investment, defence, and critical and emerging technologies.
