The number of vacancies is tentative and may be increased or decreased by the Commission.
Educational Qualification
Candidates must possess the following qualifications as of the closing date of the online application:
- A good academic record with at least 55% marks, or its equivalent under the applicable grading system, in a Master’s degree in Anthropology from a recognized Indian university.
- An equivalent degree from a foreign university recognized by the Government of India is also acceptable.
- Candidates must have cleared the eligibility test for Assistant Professor, such as NET conducted by UGC or CSIR, or a similar test accredited by the State Public Service Commission.
- NET, SLET or SET will remain the minimum eligibility requirement, subject to the exemptions provided for eligible Ph.D. degree holders under the applicable rules.
Relaxation in Master’s Degree Marks
- SC, ST and OBC Non-Creamy Layer candidates: Relaxation from 55% to 50%.
- Physically and visually handicapped candidates: Relaxation from 55% to 50%.
- Eligible Ph.D. holders who passed their Master’s degree before September 1991: Relaxation from 55% to 50%.
NET, SLET or SET Exemption for Ph.D. Candidates
Candidates who registered for an M.Phil. or Ph.D. programme before 11 July 2009 may be exempted from NET, SLET or SET, subject to fulfilment of the prescribed conditions, including:
- The Ph.D. degree must have been awarded in regular mode.
- The Ph.D. thesis must have been evaluated by at least two external examiners.
- An open Ph.D. viva voce must have been conducted.
- The candidate must have published at least two research papers from the Ph.D. work, including at least one paper in a refereed journal.
- The candidate must have made at least two conference or seminar presentations based on the Ph.D. work.
- Compliance with these conditions must be certified by the competent university authority.
Desirable Qualification
Knowledge of the customs, manners and dialects of Himachal Pradesh and suitability for appointment under the conditions prevailing in the state is desirable.

Age Relaxation
A relaxation of five years in the upper age limit is admissible to eligible bonafide candidates belonging to the following Himachal Pradesh categories, subject to the conditions specified in the notification:
- SC of Himachal Pradesh
- ST of Himachal Pradesh
- OBC of Himachal Pradesh
- Wards of Freedom Fighters of Himachal Pradesh
- Persons with disabilities of Himachal Pradesh
Age relaxation for Himachal Pradesh Government employees and Ex-Servicemen of Himachal Pradesh will be provided according to the applicable government instructions. Candidates of reserved categories belonging to other states will be treated as unreserved candidates.

The recruitment and engagement will be governed by the Himachal Pradesh Government’s scheme for the engagement of job trainees on a fixed monthly amount.

Selection Process
The HPPSC Assistant Professor Anthropology selection process includes the following stages:
- Paper I – Objective Type Screening Test
- Paper II – Descriptive Subject Aptitude Test

Paper I: Objective Screening Test
Paper I will be conducted as a Computer Based Test or offline screening test. It will carry 100 marks and have a duration of one hour.

Negative Marking
- One-fourth of the marks assigned to a question will be deducted for every incorrect answer in Paper I.
- If more than one answer is marked, it will be treated as incorrect and the same penalty will apply.
- Candidates who do not want to answer a question must select option “E”.
- If no option is selected, one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.

The Personality Test will carry 30 marks and will be held at the HPPSC office in Shimla. Final ranking will be determined using the marks obtained in the Subject Aptitude Test and Personality Test.

The notified examination station is Shimla. However, HPPSC may change or allot a different examination centre depending on administrative requirements and the availability of computer test laboratories.
