India hosts the 18th BRICS Summit; New Delhi Declaration adopted

India, under the chairship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hosted the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, from 12 to 13 September 2026 on the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability." This was India's fourth time chairing the grouping, after 2012, 2016 and 2021.

The summit closed with the consensus adoption of the New Delhi Declaration, covering trade, terrorism, artificial intelligence and reform of multilateral institutions. Dryland Congress 2026 concludes with 'Delhi Declaration on Drylands'

The three-day Dryland Congress 2026 ended in New Delhi with the adoption of the Delhi Declaration on Drylands (3D), calling for stronger South–South and triangular cooperation in dryland agriculture. Organised jointly by ICAR and ICRISAT on the theme "Transforming Dryland Agriculture with South–South Cooperation," the event also marked 50 years of the ICAR–ICRISAT partnership.

It was co-chaired by Dr. D.K. Yadava (DDG, Crop Science, ICAR) and Dr. Stanford Blade (DDG, Research & Innovation, ICRISAT). The Congress hosted the inaugural ISSCA Global Awards 2026 – International Solidarity for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture – which drew 170 nominations from 34 countries. ICRISAT signed MoUs with the Global Crop Diversity Trust, Avior Life Sciences, NIFTEM, Wipro Ltd and the district administrations of Angul and Rayagada in Odisha.

Rural Development Department and PFRDA sign MoU on 'Pension Sakhis'

The Department of Rural Development (DoRD) and the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to expand pension awareness and enrolment in rural India through a network of Pension Sakhis. The MoU was signed by Amit Shukla (Joint Secretary, DoRD) and Sumeet Kaur Kapoor (Executive Director, PFRDA), in the presence of DoRD Secretary Rohit Kansal.

• The scheme rides on the women-led DAY-NRLM network, including BC Sakhis and trained community resource persons.
• Target groups: SHG members, rural women, Lakhpati Didis and other underserved households.
• Products promoted include the National Pension System (NPS); monitoring via digital dashboards and the Department's LoKoS system.

India retains 131st rank in the Global Gender Gap Index 2026

India held its 131st position in the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Index 2026, with overall progress towards gender parity reported at 64.5%. Iceland, Finland and Norway occupied the top three places. The index measures gaps between women and men rather than a country's absolute level of development.

UP Cabinet clears 23 development proposals

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, approved 23 proposals.

• Ethanol plant at Chhata tehsil, Mathura – reviving a sugar mill closed for 19 years; Rs. 200 crore investment on a 96-acre site, producing 3.96 crore litres of ethanol a year from sugarcane and paddy.
• UP Toy Manufacturing Promotion Policy 2025, to make the state a toy manufacturing hub.
• Chitrakoot Link Expressway (15.172 km, six-lane greenfield) and an NSG regional centre at Milkipur, Ayodhya.
• 20% reservation for former Agniveers in jail warder recruitment; a new university in Aligarh.
• Loans up to Rs. 6 lakh at 6% interest for small and marginal farmers under the Mukhyamantri Krishak Samriddhi Yojana.

• Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan released "A Century of Service – The RSS in 100 Acts of Seva" by Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, former Governor of Telangana, at Uprashtrapati Bhavan. He also addressed the silver jubilee of the Indian Council of World Affairs at Sapru House.

Retail inflation rises to 4.82% in August 2026

CPI-based retail inflation accelerated to 4.82% in August 2026 from 4.45% in July, according to provisional MoSPI data released on 14 September. The readings come under the revised CPI series with 2024 as the base year.

Food remains the principal pressure point, with rural food inflation at 6.13% and urban at 5.64%.

PLFS Monthly Bulletin, August 2026: unemployment eases to 5.0%

The National Statistics Office released the 17th monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey bulletin covering both rural and urban areas.

For persons aged 15 years and above

• Unemployment Rate: 5.0% in August, down from 5.1% in July.
• Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR): 55.6%, up from 55.4%.
• Worker Population Ratio (WPR): 52.8%, up from 52.5%, driven by rural participation.
• Sample: 3,70,160 persons – 2,11,353 rural and 1,58,807 urban.

RBI and policy watch

• NBFC credit: The RBI has proposed restricting non-banking financial companies from offering revolving credit products, except those authorised to issue credit cards.
• Appointment: Monisha Chakraborty took charge as Executive Director of the RBI with effect from 3 August 2026, overseeing the Foreign Exchange Department and the Financial Markets Regulation Department. She was earlier CGM-in-Charge, Department of Supervision.
• Liquidity: The phased 100 bps cut in the Cash Reserve Ratio, to 3% of NDTL in four tranches of 25 bps, continues to be rolled out to support credit growth.
• EPFO: The government is considering raising the statutory wage ceiling for mandatory coverage under the EPF & MP Act from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000 per month – a significant widening of organised-sector social security.
• Digital payments: Debate continues over reintroducing a Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on high-value UPI transactions, balancing the financial sustainability of payments infrastructure against affordability and inclusion. Note that MDR is a merchant-side charge, not a tax on every UPI payment.

TCS partners with Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange

Tata Consultancy Services announced a strategic partnership with the Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange (DGCX) to modernise its trading, clearing and surveillance platforms. TCS will deploy TCS BaNCS for Market Infrastructure, Quartz for Surveillance, the TCS BaNCS Securities Trading Platform and Quartz Gateway. The upgraded system will cover energy commodities, currencies, equities, bullion and emerging assets including tokenised instruments.

ISRO ends a seven-month launch pause with GSLV-F17/EOS-05

ISRO launched the GSLV-F17/EOS-05 mission on 4 September 2026 at 02:55 AM IST from Sriharikota, placing a payload of over 2,300 kg precisely into orbit. EOS-05, also known as GISAT-1A, is India's first imaging satellite in geo-orbit and was the agency's first successful launch of 2026, ending a gap of nearly seven months after the PSLV-C62/EOS-N1 failure in January.

Why it matters

• Geo-orbit placement allows high-frequency, repeated imaging of large parts of the Indian landmass – useful for disaster monitoring, agriculture and forestry.
• It replaces GISAT-1 (EOS-03), lost in the GSLV-F10 failure of August 2021.
• ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said six more launches are targeted this financial year, including the navigation satellite NVS-03.
• Work on the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission – carrying the humanoid Vyommitra – is progressing for launch in this calendar year, ahead of a crewed flight targeted for 2027.

India–France sign three new space agreements

Indian and French companies signed three agreements at the International Space Summit in Paris covering satellite launches, space surveillance and microsatellite technology, including contracts worth more than 5 million euros. Separately, Godrej Enterprises Group supplied Vikas engines, cryogenic engine nozzles and satellite thruster components used on the EOS-05 mission.

DRDO develops indigenous GaN MMIC technology

As noted in the Ministry of Defence annual report for 2025-26, a team led by Dr. Meena Mishra, Director of DRDO's Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL), developed indigenous Gallium Nitride (GaN) Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit technology for high-frequency defence applications – a critical building block for modern radar and electronic warfare systems.

Indian and Pakistani warships collide in the North Arabian Sea

A Pakistan Navy vessel collided with an Indian Navy warship on a routine surveillance mission in international waters of the North Arabian Sea on the evening of 15 September 2026, roughly 120–130 nautical miles east of the Oman coast. No major structural damage was reported.

India said the Pakistani ship closed in at high speed and manoeuvred in an unsafe and unprofessional manner. On 16 September, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned Pakistan's Chargé d'Affaires in New Delhi to lodge a strong protest, and instructed India's Chargé d'Affaires in Islamabad to do the same with Pakistan's Foreign Ministry.

Exam angle

• India cited a violation of Article 10 of the 1991 India–Pakistan Agreement on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troop Movements, and of international collision-prevention obligations (COLREGs).
• Warships in international waters normally keep 2–3 nautical miles apart.
• Context: the Indian Navy has kept three to four ships on station in the Arabian Sea daily in recent months, largely escorting Indian-flagged merchant vessels amid disruption around the Strait of Hormuz.

Yudh Abhyas 2026 – India–US joint exercise, 22nd edition

The 22nd edition of Exercise Yudh Abhyas opened with a ceremony at the Auli Foreign Training Node in Uttarakhand on 15 September and runs until 28 September 2026. For the first time, the exercise is being conducted simultaneously across two very different theatres: high-altitude mountain warfare at Auli, and semi-desert mechanised manoeuvres and live firing at the Mahajan Field Firing Range near Bikaner, Rajasthan.

• The US contingent features Arctic-trained soldiers of the 11th Airborne Division (Fort Wainwright, Alaska), with the 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force bringing long-range precision fires and integrated command-and-control.
• The opening ceremony was addressed by Major General Amaresh Gunjan, GOC 14 Infantry Division, and Colonel Benjamin Jackman of the US Army.
• Focus areas: drones and autonomous systems for surveillance, multi-domain warfare, and exchange of tactics, techniques and procedures.
• The series has run since 2004, alternating hosts between the two countries.

VIMARSH 2026: Rajnath Singh unveils measures for defence MSMEs and start-ups

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced a set of initiatives to lower entry barriers for MSMEs and deep-tech start-ups at VIMARSH 2026, the DRDO–Industry Synergy Meet in New Delhi, held on the theme 'Varta se Vikas'.

• A framework offering direct funding, incubation support and access to DRDO testing facilities for MSMEs and start-ups.
• A standardised, secure framework for sharing software source code with licensee industries, to advance software-defined defence capability and counter technology obsolescence.
• Nine Licensing Agreements for Transfer of Technology (LAToTs) handed to 13 manufacturing partners.

India win a record-extending 8th Women's T20 Asia Cup

The Indian women's team beat Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on 13 September 2026, posting 183/5 and bowling Sri Lanka out for 111. It is India's eighth Women's Asia Cup title.

• Shafali Verma (68 off 39) was Player of the Match; Smriti Mandhana (59 off 39) was named Top Performer. Their 129-run opening stand was a record.
• Verma's 24-ball fifty is the fastest in Women's T20I Asia Cup history.
• The 2026 edition, held 28 August – 13 September, was the sixth Women's T20 Asia Cup and the tenth Women's Asia Cup overall, organised by the Asian Cricket Council.

Sports Ministry sets up task force on reviving Formula 1 in India

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced a 10-member task force to examine the feasibility of bringing Formula 1 back to India and to draft a roadmap for motorsport. The panel will explore hosting an F1 Grand Prix in 2028.

• Chaired by Yugal Kishore Joshi, Programme Director and Adviser, NITI Aayog.
• Members drawn from the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Tourism, CBIC, CBDT, the Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra governments, the Buddh International Circuit, Madras International Circuit and the FMSCI.
• Mandate includes the taxation issues that contributed to F1's earlier exit from India, and suitable PPP models.

IOA institutes memorial trophies for Asian Games athletes

IOA President P.T. Usha announced two memorial awards at the launch of 'Maverick Jaspal', a book on Jaspal Rana co-authored by S Kannan and G Rajaraman.

• Raja Randhir Singh Trophy – best male athlete of the Asian Games. Randhir Singh was IOA Secretary General from 1987 to 2012 and later President of the Olympic Council of Asia; he died in May 2026, aged 79.
• Jaspal Rana Trophy – best female athlete of the Asian Games. Rana won a world-record gold in the 25m standard pistol at the 1994 ISSF World Championship, 15 Commonwealth Games medals (9 gold) and 8 Asian Games medals (4 gold). He died in June 2026, aged 49.

Hosting decisions and a retirement

• World Athletics Championships 2029 – Nairobi, Kenya. Announced by WA President Sebastian Coe, this will be the first edition held in Africa. Nairobi beat bids from London and Rome. Upcoming editions: Beijing (2027) and Munich (2031).
• UEFA Champions League finals: Munich Football Arena hosts the 2028 final; Camp Nou, Barcelona hosts 2029 – its first since 1999. Europa League finals go to Bucharest and Belgrade, Conference League to Turin and Budapest, Women's Champions League to Lyon and Cardiff.
• James Rodríguez retires from international football at 35, after 15 years and 131 caps with 31 goals for Colombia. He won the Golden Boot with six goals at the 2014 World Cup and the FIFA Puskás Award; he played in the 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups.

17 September – World Patient Safety Day

Established by the World Health Organization, World Patient Safety Day is observed every year on 17 September to build global awareness of patient safety and to urge action to reduce avoidable harm in healthcare. In India, 17 September is also observed as Vishwakarma Puja, honouring the divine architect and craftsman, and is widely marked in factories and workshops.

16 September – International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

Also called World Ozone Day. The 2026 observance was the 32nd edition, on the theme "Global action for a cooler planet."
