Counties of Colorado : How many Counties are in Colorado?

           Colorado County is located in the westernmost United States. In terms of landmass, Colorado is the eighth most extensive state among the 50 U.S. states. The U.S. state of Colorado is nicknamed the ‘Centennial State’.  It is one of the Mountain States, due to half of the state’s area lies in the Rocky Mountains. It has a total area of 104,094 square miles (269,601 sq. km) with a land area of 103,718 square miles and 376 square miles of water area. According to the 2022 United States census, the population of the U.S. state of Colorado is estimated as 5,839,926 residents, making Colorado the 21st most populous in the United States. Denver is the capital and the largest and the most densely populous city of the U.S. state of Colorado. 

                          The U. S. state Colorado, was admitted to the union as the 38th state on 1st August, 1876. It was bordered northeast by Nebraska, north to Wyoming, Kansas to the east, New Mexico to the south, Arizona to the southwest, Utah to the west, and Oklahoma to the southeast. The residents who have lived in the U.S. state of Colorado are known as ‘Coloradans’.  The Westernmost U.S. state, Colorado, was divided into 64 counties. As of the 2020 United States census, El Paso County is the most populous while  San Juan County is the least populous, with 705 residents.  According to the area, Las Animas County is the largest county among 64 counties of Colorado, with an area of 4,776 square miles, while the city and county of Broomfield is the least Extensive county, having an area of 34 square miles. Of the total 64 counties, two of these counties: City and County of Denver, City and County of Broomfield have consolidated city & county governments. Each county is authorized by the Colorado Constitution to make and enforce local governance that does not conflict with general laws. 

                  The U.S. state of Colorado, is known for its rich history and vibrant culture. It has a diverse landscape of arid deserts, river canyons, snow-covered Rocky Mountains, the Great Plains, The Colorado Plateau, and Forests. The county is home to Rocky Mountain National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, Garden of the Gods, and several universities including, the University of Colorado, and Colorado State University.              Denver is a Consolidated City-County and the capital of the U.S. state of Colorado. It is located in the Western United States. According to the 2020 United States census, it is the most populous city of Colorado and the 19th most populous city in the United States with a population of 7,15,522 residents. Denver, the consolidated city-county, has an area of 154 square miles (400 sq. km). The Consolidated city-county is nicknamed as the ‘Mile High City’, due to it being elevated exactly one mile above the sea level. 

      The city and County of Denver is one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S.A. The county is governed by a Mayor and a city council. The mayor serves as the chief executive, and the city council is responsible for legislative functions.  It acts as the Economic and cultural hub. It is known for its iconic landmarks, breweries, and Historical museums including Larimer Square, Molly Brown House Museum, Denver Art Museum, Colorado State Capitol, and the Denver Botanic Gardens. Energy and Natural Resources Industry is the major industry in Denver, which supports the county’s local economy.

Boulder County

             Boulder County is a county in Colorado, United States. According to the 2020 United States census, it has a population of 3,30,758 residents, within the geographical area of 740 square miles. The county is further divided into three districts. Boulder is the County Seat and the largest city of Boulder County. It was the most populous and developed city. Boulder City is located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The county is known for being the site of the Gold Rush from 1858-1859. The county is home to the University of Colorado Boulder, which is a Major Public research university. Aero Space, Manufacturing, and renewable energy are the major industries in the county, which supports the county’s local economy.           

El Paso County

            El Paso County is situated in the central region of Colorado, U.S. state. According to the 2020 United States census it is the most populous county in the state, having 7,30,395 residents. The county has an area of 2,130 square miles. El Paso county shares its  borders with Fremont & Teller counties to the west, Douglas,  Pueblo, and Lincoln counties to the north, south, and east respectively. Colorado Springs is the county seat of El Paso County, which is the second most populous city in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the other counties, El Paso is also the county government structure and has a board of county commissioners to govern the county with transparency. El Paso is home to Pikes Peak, America’s Mountain, which is one of the most famous mountains in the United States. 

Mesa County

         Mesa County is located in the western region of Colorado, a U.S. state. It has an area of 3,341 square miles (8,650 sq. km), with a population of 1,55,703 residents. Grand Junction is the county seat and the largest and also the most populous city in the county, it serves as the regional hub for surrounding areas. Mesa County is home to the world’s largest flat-topped mountain, Grand Mesa. The county is known for fruit Orchards, which are in the western portions of Grand Valley. Health Care, Education, and Public services are playing a vital role in the county’s local economy. 

Las Animas County

              Las Animas County is situated in the Southeastern region of Colorado, United States. It has an area of 4,775 square miles (12,370 sq. km). According to the 2020 United States census the county had a population of 14,555 residents. Trinidad is a county seat. Once the county seat is the place on the historic Fe Trail, later it becomes a centre for cattle ranching and mining. The county is home to Spanish peaks, Purgatory river and it is known for diverse landscapes including, mountains, peaks, canyons, high plains. The major tourist attractions in the county include, Trinidad History Museum, West Spanish Peak, and Trinidad Lake State Park. Agriculture and mining plays a major role in the county’s economy.  

Douglas County

              Douglas County is situated in the north-central part of Colorado, United States. It is one of Colorado’s 17 original Counties. According to the 2020 United States census, the county had a population of 3,57,978 residents. It has an area of 843 square miles (2,180 sq. km). It is located between the two largest and most populous cities, Denver and Colorado Springs. Castle Rock is the county seat. Like the other counties, Douglas County has also a county government structure and an elected board of commissioners, governing the county with transparency. Castle Rock is Douglas’s most prominent city.

Arapahoe County

              Arapahoe County is situated in the central part of Colorado, U.S. state. It is one of the original 17 counties of Colorado. According to the 2020 United States census, Arapahoe County ranked 3rd most populous, with a population of 6,55,070 residents. It has an area of 805 square miles (2,080 sq. km). Littleton is the county seat and Aurora is the largest and the most populous city in Arapahoe county. Like the other counties, Arapahoe County also has a county government structure and an elected board of commissioners. The county has a mix of both urban and rural areas. Technology, Health care, and finance industries are the major sources of the county’s economy.

Jefferson County

            Jefferson County is located in the North central region of Colorado, United States. It has an area of 774 square miles (2,000 sq. km). According to the 2020 United States census, Jefferson County is the fourth most populous county among the 64 counties of Colorado, United States, with a population of 582,910. Golden is the County seat and Lakewood city is the most populous city in the county.  Like the other counties, Jefferson County also has a county government structure and an elected board of commissioners. Jefferson County has magnificent scenery for visitors and it is the best place for recreation.
