BARC Junior Research Fellowships Vacancy 2026 Details 

Eligibility Criteria

• Candidates must be Indian nationals with consistently good academic record.
• Only those who have successfully cleared and possess valid certificate for at least one of the following national level examinations are eligible: UGC-CSIR-NET Fellowship (SLET/Lectureship not eligible), JEST, ICMR-JRF Test, ICAR-JRF Test, DBT-JRF Biotechnology Eligibility Test, GATE in Physics/Chemistry/Life Sciences/Biotechnology, or JGEEBILS.
• Candidates should have secured minimum 60% aggregate in B.Sc. and 55% aggregate in M.Sc. from a recognized University.
• Candidates with five years Integrated M.Sc./B.S-M.S. (Dual degree) should have secured minimum 55% aggregate.
• Candidates having a 4-year / 8-semester bachelor’s degree (B.S with fourth year Research) with minimum 75% marks in aggregate are also eligible to apply.
• Candidates who have completed but are awaiting final results of M.Sc., Integrated M.Sc., B.S-M.S. (Dual degree) or B.S. (with fourth year Research) may also apply, subject to specified minimum aggregates up to the previous semester and completion of degree requirements before 10-08-2026.
• M.Sc. / Integrated M.Sc. / B.S-M.S. (Dual degree) / B.S. (with fourth year Research) in Physics with Mathematics as one of the subjects at B.Sc. level is eligible.
• M.Sc. / Integrated M.Sc. / B.S-M.S. (Dual degree) / B.S. (with fourth year Research) in Chemistry (General/Applied/Organic/Inorganic/Physical/Analytical) with Physics as ancillary subject at B.Sc. level and Mathematics at H.Sc. level is eligible, subject to passing marks in these subjects.
• M.Sc. / Integrated M.Sc. / B.S-M.S. (Dual degree) / B.S. (with fourth year Research) in Life Sciences disciplines (including Life Science, Botany, Zoology, Agriculture, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Marine Biology, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Plant Science, Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Animal Science, Biomedical Sciences, Biosciences, Food Science, Food Science and Technology) with Physics or Chemistry or Biochemistry or Agriculture Chemistry or allied Chemistry as one of the subjects at B.Sc./five-year integrated M.Sc. level is eligible.
• Candidates with specializations listed as not eligible in Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences (such as Electronics and Instrumentation, Industrial Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Textile Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Petroleum Chemistry, Nanoscience, Nanotechnology, Fisheries, Horticulture, Forestry, Agronomy, Animal Husbandry, Bio-analytical Sciences, Polymer Science, Medicine/Medical Science, Pharmaceutical Science, Home Science, and B.Tech./M.Tech. in Life Sciences disciplines) are not eligible.
• All academic requirements for the qualifying degree must be completed before 10-08-2026, and relevant proof must be produced at joining.

Salary/Stipend

• Selected candidates will initially be considered as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) and will be paid a stipend of ₹37,000/- per month for a period of two years.
• On satisfactory performance and review, the fellowship will be upgraded to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from the third year onwards with a stipend of ₹42,000/- per month (consolidated).
• The total duration of the fellowship is five years.
• Candidates are entitled to a contingency grant including book allowance of ₹60,000/- per year.
• Financial assistance to attend one International Conference abroad during the PhD Programme may be provided, subject to conditions updated by HBNI.

Age Limit 

• The candidate should be less than 28 years of age as on 01-08-2026.
• Age relaxation is applicable up to 3 years for Other Backward Class Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) applicants.
• Age relaxation is applicable up to 5 years for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe applicants.
• Additional 10 years of age relaxation is applicable for persons with benchmark disabilities (PwBD) applicants.
• Age, qualification, community status and creamy layer status will be reckoned as on 01-08-2026 for submission of online application.

Application Fee

• Application fee of ₹500/- is payable at the time of submission of online application.
• Mode of payment of the application fee is online only, using net banking, debit card, credit card, UPI, etc.
• Application fee is exempted for Women candidates and candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Person with Benchmark Disabilities.
• After submission of the online application, the applicant has to make online payment of application fee using the Application Number generated; applications without fee payment will be treated as incomplete and rejected.
• Candidates must use the ‘Make Payment’ option under the ‘My Account’ menu to pay the fee, selecting the generated application number from the drop-down list.
• Detailed guidelines for payment of application fee are available under the menu “How to pay Application fee.”
• Fee once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances and cannot be held in reserve for any other recruitment.
• Application fee should be paid on or before the last date of receipt of online application.

Important Dates

Selection Process

• Applications will be scrutinized and candidates will be screened in for interview based on eligibility as per the national level exam and their score in the qualifying exam.
• The number of candidates to be called for interview will be decided by the Selection Committee.
• Final selection will be based on the performance of the candidate in the selection interview only.
• Allotment of research project will be on the basis of performance in the selection interview; in case of a tie, marks obtained in M.Sc./B.Sc. will be considered.
• The recommendation/decision of the Selection Committee will be final and binding.

How to Apply

• Facility for submission of online application will be available from 10/03/2026 to 31/03/2026 at the specified application portal.
• Applications will be accepted online only and candidates should not submit multiple applications.
• Candidates must read the instructions in the advertisement and online application form carefully before making any entry or selecting any option, and keep necessary documents/certificates ready.
• All Educational and Professional Qualifications must be indicated under the ‘Educational & Professional Qualifications’ column; otherwise, the application will not be processed.
• Candidates “pursuing” relevant degrees must choose the correct option from the ‘Name of Examination’ drop-down box, while those who have completed the degree must choose the appropriate completed option.
• A valid e-mail ID and mobile number are mandatory, and the email ID must remain active till declaration of results; call letters or instructions may be sent by email or made available on the website.
• Photo and signature must be clearly visible in preview; a recent front-facing passport size photograph in JPEG format of size not exceeding 50 KB must be uploaded, otherwise the application will be rejected.
• Candidates must upload SSC/H.Sc./B.Sc./M.Sc./Integrated M.Sc./B.S-M.S. (Dual degree)/B.S. (with fourth year Research) mark sheets and Degree Certificates, valid Qualifying Examination Score Card and Caste Certificate (if applicable); applications without these attachments will be disqualified.
• Before final submission, candidates should verify that all details, including name and date of birth, are correct as per SSC; no change or correction will be allowed after final submission.
• If original educational documents have been submitted to another institution, copies may be uploaded and a letter from the Head of that institution must be produced at the time of interview.
• In case of any difficulty in applying online or uploading documents, candidates should email complaints with screenshots to the specified email address given in the notification.
