Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must be Indian nationals with consistently good academic record.
Only those who have successfully cleared and possess valid certificate for at least one of the following national level examinations are eligible: UGC-CSIR-NET Fellowship (SLET/Lectureship not eligible), JEST, ICMR-JRF Test, ICAR-JRF Test, DBT-JRF Biotechnology Eligibility Test, GATE in Physics/Chemistry/Life Sciences/Biotechnology, or JGEEBILS.
Candidates should have secured minimum 60% aggregate in B.Sc. and 55% aggregate in M.Sc. from a recognized University.
Candidates with five years Integrated M.Sc./B.S-M.S. (Dual degree) should have secured minimum 55% aggregate.
Candidates having a 4-year / 8-semester bachelor’s degree (B.S with fourth year Research) with minimum 75% marks in aggregate are also eligible to apply.
Candidates who have completed but are awaiting final results of M.Sc., Integrated M.Sc., B.S-M.S. (Dual degree) or B.S. (with fourth year Research) may also apply, subject to specified minimum aggregates up to the previous semester and completion of degree requirements before 10-08-2026.

(with fourth year Research) in Life Sciences disciplines (including Life Science, Botany, Zoology, Agriculture, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Marine Biology, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Plant Science, Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Animal Science, Biomedical Sciences, Biosciences, Food Science, Food Science and Technology) with Physics or Chemistry or Biochemistry or Agriculture Chemistry or allied Chemistry as one of the subjects at B.Sc./five-year integrated M.Sc. level is eligible.
Candidates with specializations listed as not eligible in Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences (such as Electronics and Instrumentation, Industrial Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Textile Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Petroleum Chemistry, Nanoscience, Nanotechnology, Fisheries, Horticulture, Forestry, Agronomy, Animal Husbandry, Bio-analytical Sciences, Polymer Science, Medicine/Medical Science, Pharmaceutical Science, Home Science, and B.Tech./M.Tech. in Life Sciences disciplines) are not eligible.
All academic requirements for the qualifying degree must be completed before 10-08-2026, and relevant proof must be produced at joining.
Selected candidates will initially be considered as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) and will be paid a stipend of ₹37,000/- per month for a period of two years.
On satisfactory performance and review, the fellowship will be upgraded to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from the third year onwards with a stipend of ₹42,000/- per month (consolidated).
The total duration of the fellowship is five years.
Candidates are entitled to a contingency grant including book allowance of ₹60,000/- per year.
Financial assistance to attend one International Conference abroad during the PhD Programme may be provided, subject to conditions updated by HBNI.
Age Limit
The candidate should be less than 28 years of age as on 01-08-2026.
Age relaxation is applicable up to 3 years for Other Backward Class Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) applicants.
Age relaxation is applicable up to 5 years for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe applicants.
Additional 10 years of age relaxation is applicable for persons with benchmark disabilities (PwBD) applicants.
Age, qualification, community status and creamy layer status will be reckoned as on 01-08-2026 for submission of online application.
Application Fee
Application fee of ₹500/- is payable at the time of submission of online application.

Selection Process
Applications will be scrutinized and candidates will be screened in for interview based on eligibility as per the national level exam and their score in the qualifying exam.
The number of candidates to be called for interview will be decided by the Selection Committee.
Final selection will be based on the performance of the candidate in the selection interview only.
Allotment of research project will be on the basis of performance in the selection interview; in case of a tie, marks obtained in M.Sc./B.Sc. will be considered.
The recommendation/decision of the Selection Committee will be final and binding.
