IIT Delhi Recruitment 2026 Job Description
The notice gives one set of working requirements for all project fellows:
- Visit the NCR-based Thermal Power Plants regularly to collect samples, analyse data and carry out chemical study of the foam from the FGD units.
- Work in close coordination with IITD and NTPC's TPPs in the NCR for data collection and analysis. Modelling and optimisation can be done through CFD simulation.
- Project fellows will be encouraged to register for the PhD programme under the Institute rules. A fellow admitted to the PhD programme will work on a PhD topic related to the project only, and will give time to it after completing the course work.
Project Background and Objectives
The Government of India has mandated 7% mixing of biomass in thermal power plants for co-firing. The notice says the use of agro-waste in these plants has been lower than expected because of practical problems such as foaming and tripping of the pumps in the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) unit, ash handling and combustion instability. It also points to a lack of standardised data on how biomass behaves under Indian conditions. The project's objectives are:
- Collect biomass samples, both torrefied and non-torrefied, and characterise them (proximate, ultimate, FTIR, XRD and ICP-MS) to find possible causes of foaming and suggest pre-treatment strategies.
- Collect foam samples from FGD units while monitoring pH, oxygen, flue gas composition, temperature and blending ratio, and study the foams in depth to find the causes and mechanisms of foaming in the FGD-absorber.
- Optimise the biomass blending ratio, lime quality and injection rate to remove foaming in the FGD-absorber at the lab scale.
- Identify and develop suitable corrective measures to suppress foaming in the FGD-absorber.
- Carry out a detailed study to develop solutions for the increased moisture content in calcium sulphate (gypsum) caused by foaming in FGD.
