  • NITI Aayog Releases 8th Edition of Trade Watch Quarterly for Q4 FY26 – NITI Aayog released the 8th edition of the 'Trade Watch Quarterly (TWQ)' for Q4 (January–March 2026) of FY2025-26 in New Delhi, in the presence of Nidhi Chhibber, interim CEO of NITI Aayog. This edition focuses on the pharmaceutical sector with special emphasis on Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). The global pharmaceutical market recorded an estimated demand of USD 1.3 trillion in 2025. Exam importance: India's pharmaceutical sector contributes over 1.7% to GDP and accounts for 7.2% of manufacturing GVA. India's total merchandise and services trade expanded by 5.4% during FY26 to reach USD 1.84 trillion.   • Union Civil Aviation Minister Inaugurates India's First Hub-and-Spoke Flight from Varanasi – Union Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu (MoCA) inaugurated India's first hub-and-spoke flight - Air India flight 1111 - from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, enabling connectivity to 17 international destinations including Rome (Italy), Singapore, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and Phuket (Thailand), via New Delhi. Exam importance: The launch was under Air India's 'Easy Connect' initiative, designed to facilitate international connectivity from tier-2 and tier-3 Indian cities at scale. Under this initiative, passengers from smaller cities will be able to complete all immigration formalities and baggage checks at their home airport, removing the need for re-booking at large metro transit hubs.   • C-DOT and IIT Hyderabad Sign MoU to Establish Centre of Excellence in Advanced Communication Technologies – The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the premier R&D centre under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), signed an MoU with IIT Hyderabad (IITH) to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in advanced communication technologies at IITH's campus in Hyderabad. This marks C-DOT's 4th CoE after IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Roorkee. Exam importance: Key focus areas: wireless communications, quantum technologies, cybersecurity, and AI-driven applications. The CoE will undertake joint research in 5G Advanced/6G technologies, massive MIMO systems, integrated sensing and communication, AI-enabled networks, and quantum & post-quantum communications. C-DOT has already collaborated with WiSig Networks (WISIG), a startup incubated at IITH, for disaggregated 5G Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) solutions.   • ASSOCHAM and ACCI Sign MoU to Enhance India–Afghanistan Trade Relations – The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) signed an MoU with the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI) in New Delhi to boost bilateral trade, investment, and business cooperation. The MoU was signed by Nirmal Kumar Minda (President, ASSOCHAM) and Sayed Mohammad Karim Hashemi (Chairman, ACCI) during the visit of an Afghan business delegation to India. Exam importance: Focus areas: Mining, Food Processing, Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare, Oil & Gas, and Sugar Manufacturing. The partners will work toward facilitating a 15–20 member Indian business delegation to expand the current USD 1 billion bilateral trade.   • BharathCloud and ICSI Sign MoU to Provide Sovereign AI Cloud Infrastructure for Company Secretaries – BharathCloud, India's sovereign AI cloud provider, signed an MoU with the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) in Pune, Maharashtra, to provide secure India-hosted cloud infrastructure for Company Secretaries. The MoU was signed by Padma Reddy Sama (Co-Founder, BharathCloud) and CS Pawan G. Chandak (President, ICSI). Exam importance: ICSI members will receive BharathCloud services at special pricing for 2 years along with onboarding, training, and technical support. The platform provides encrypted storage, India-hosted data, automated backups, disaster recovery, remote access, and 24×7 support. ICSI was established in 1980 under the Company Secretaries Act, 1980; HQ: New Delhi; ICSI regulates the profession of Company Secretaries in India; it is a statutory body under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. 
  • 2nd Civil Investiture Ceremony 2026: President Murmu Confers 65 Padma Awards – President Droupadi Murmu conferred 65 Padma Awards during the second Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. The awards included 2 Padma Vibhushan, 7 Padma Bhushan, and 56 Padma Shri honours recognising excellence in sports, cinema, music, literature, science, public affairs, and social service. Notable recipients included Rohit Sharma, R. Madhavan, Mammootty, Alka Yagnik, and Vijay Amritraj.   • TOP500 Supercomputer Rankings 2026: China's LineShine Tops Global List; India's Shakti Cloud at 32nd – The 67th edition of TOP500 Supercomputer Rankings 2026 was released at the International Supercomputing (ISC) High Performance 2026 conference in Hamburg, Germany. China's LineShine machine, based at the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen, emerged as the world's most powerful supercomputer, replacing the USA's El Capitan. LineShine is nearly 26 times faster than India's most powerful supercomputer 'Shakti Cloud', which secured 32nd spot with a performance of 84.31 petaflops. Exam importance: Other top 5: USA's Frontier (3rd) and Aurora (4th), Germany's Jupiter (5th). New entrant: Eni S.p.A.'s HPC7 (Italy) debuted at 6th spot with 571.5 petaflop/s. Most represented countries: USA (161 systems), Japan (44), Germany (41), China (31). India ranks 16th with 7 supercomputers: PARAM Siddhi-AI, Pratyush, Mihir, Aditya, SahasraT, Arka, and Param Bramha. TOP500 is a biannual list published since June 1993; performance is measured in FLOPS (Floating Point Operations Per Second); India's National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) aims to build a grid of over 70 high-performance computing facilities across India.
  • Bangladesh Joins India's International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) as 27th Member – Bangladesh officially joined India's International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) as its 27th member country, following Cabinet approval on 22 May 2026. Bangladesh's accession strengthens transboundary conservation of the Bengal tiger and leopard in the Sundarbans, promotes South Asian ecosystem protection, and enhances coordinated monitoring, data sharing, and anti-poaching efforts. Exam importance: The accession followed diplomatic discussions between Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma and Bangladesh Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo in April 2026. The IBCA was launched by PM Modi on 9 April 2023 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger; IBCA protects 7 big cat species - Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Puma, and Jaguar; IBCA Secretariat: New Delhi; India is home to approximately 75% of the world's wild tigers (as per 2022 Tiger Census, India has 3,682 tigers).
  • USA Announces USD 482.2 Million Package for India's M777A2 Howitzers and AH-64E Apache Helicopters – The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified a proposed sale of sustainment support services for India's AH-64E Apache helicopters and M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers at an estimated cost of USD 482.2 million - comprising USD 230 million for M777A Howitzers and USD 198.2 million for Apache Helicopters. Exam importance: Principal contractors: Boeing and Lockheed Martin (Apache helicopters support services); BAE Systems, Cumbria, UK (M777 Howitzers). In 2017, the US DoD granted a USD 542 million contract to BAE Systems for 145 M777 ultra-lightweight howitzers for the Indian Army. In December 2025, the Indian Army received the final batch of 3 Apache helicopters from Boeing. The M777 is a 155mm lightweight towed artillery system; the AH-64E Apache is a multi-role attack helicopter for precision strikes in all-weather, day/night missions; this is a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) under the US Arms Export Control Act.

  • S&P Global Downgrades India's FY27 GDP Growth Forecast to 6.6% – Standard & Poor's (S&P) Global Ratings, in its report "Economic Outlook Asia-Pacific Q3 2026: AI-Exposed Markets To Outperform," cut India's GDP forecast to 6.6% for FY2026-27, driven by energy stress, sub-par monsoon, and slowing global growth. Exam importance: India's economy recorded 7.7% growth in FY26 and 7.1% in FY25. S&P expects growth to improve to 7.2% in FY28 and 7% in FY29. Retail inflation is expected to rise to 5.1% in FY27, with a 0.5–0.6% spike in Q3 FY27 (October–December 2026). S&P Global Ratings is one of the world's three major credit rating agencies along with Moody's and Fitch; HQ: New York, USA; India's sovereign rating by S&P: BBB- (lowest investment grade, stable outlook); the forecast cut follows similar revisions by Fitch (6.4%) and OECD (6.3%) in June 2026.
  • Cross-Border Payments Platform Skydo Secures Canada Registration; Becomes First Indian Cross-Border Company with Overseas Regulatory Approval – Cross-border payments platform Skydo secured an international payment licence in Canada under Canada's Retail Payment Activities Act (RPAA), monitored by the Bank of Canada - becoming the first Indian cross-border company to receive regulatory approval overseas. Exam importance: The licence will enable two-day payment flows between India and Canada, supporting local collections and payouts. Combined with its India approval and GIFT City approval, Skydo is consolidating its position in the India-Canada corridor across trade, education, tourism, and business. Skydo was founded in 2022 in Bengaluru by Movin Jain and Srivatsan Sridhar. Canada's Retail Payment Activities Act (RPAA) was enacted in 2021 to regulate payment service providers; Bank of Canada is Canada's central bank, headquartered in Ottawa; India's GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) in Gandhinagar is India's first operational smart city and international financial services centre.

  • Abiy Ahmed Secures Second Consecutive Term as Ethiopian Prime Minister – Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed's Prosperity Party (PP) secured a landslide victory in Ethiopia's general election held on 1 June 2026, winning 438 of the 501 contested seats in the House of Peoples' Representatives. Abiy Ahmed is expected to be sworn in for a second consecutive five-year term as PM in October 2026. Exam importance: Abiy Ahmed was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 for his efforts in resolving the long-standing conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Ethiopia is the 2nd most populous country in Africa (after Nigeria); capital: Addis Ababa; Ethiopia is a founding member of the African Union (AU), headquartered in Addis Ababa; Abiy Ahmed has been PM since April 2018; the Prosperity Party was formed in 2019 by merging four parties. 

Acquisitions & Mergers

  • CCI Approves Honda's Proposal to Acquire Additional 21% Stake in Astemo from Hitachi – The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved Honda Motor Co. Limited's proposal to buy an additional 21% stake in automotive components manufacturer Astemo Limited from Hitachi. Post-acquisition, Honda's stake in Astemo will rise to 61%, making it a consolidated subsidiary, while Hitachi and JIC Capital will hold 19% and 20% respectively. Exam importance: CCI also granted approval to Alpha Wave Global's proposed stake acquisition in Nxtra Data Limited, the Data Centre and cloud services arm of Bharti Airtel, valuing Nxtra at around USD 3.1 billion. Separately, Bharti Airtel acquired a 16.3% stake in Airtel Africa from ICIL for approximately ₹28,200 crore, increasing its shareholding to approximately 79%. CCI was established in 2003 under the Competition Act, 2002; CCI Chairperson: Ravneet Kaur; CCI ensures fair competition by preventing anti-competitive practices and regulating mergers and acquisitions.

  • ATREE Scientists Discover Two New Microscopic Snail Species in Meghalaya's Limestone Caves – Scientists from Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) discovered two new microscopic snail species - Georissa meghalayaensis and Acmella bensoni - in Krem Puri and Arwah limestone caves, Meghalaya. The findings were published in the European Journal of Taxonomy. Exam importance: Georissa meghalayaensis is endemic to Meghalaya with an orangish-red shell with mesh-like ridges; Acmella bensoni is named after William H. Benson and has a translucent whitish shell with deep grooves. Both species require microscopic examination for identification. Meghalaya is part of the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot with around 1,200 limestone caves. Their habitats face threats from heavy tourist footfall, artificial lighting, cave stairway construction, and limestone mining.
  • ZSI Discovers Two New Moth Species in Kerala's Western Ghats and Karnataka – The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Pune, in collaboration with the Natural History Museum, London, discovered two new moth species - Antaram idukki (tiger moth) in Idukki, Kerala, and Mimeusemia kali (forester moth) in Kali Tiger Reserve, Karnataka - expanding Western Ghats biodiversity records. Exam importance: Antaram idukki belongs to subfamily Arctiinae, family Erebidae, and serves as a night pollinator and bio-indicator. Mimeusemia kali is a day-active forester moth (family Noctuidae), the first addition to genus Mimeusemia in approximately 30 years, bringing the genus total to 30 taxa worldwide. ZSI was established in 1916; HQ: Kolkata, West Bengal; Director: Dhriti Banerjee; the Western Ghats is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2012) and one of the world's eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity.

  • International Fencing Federation (FIE) and Fencing Association of India (FAI) Sign MoU for LA 2028 – The International Fencing Federation (FIE) signed an MoU with the Fencing Association of India (FAI) to strengthen cooperation and support the growth and promotion of fencing in India for the upcoming Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The MoU was signed by Abdelmoniem El Husseiny (Interim President, FIE) and Rajeev Mehta (Secretary General, FAI) on the sidelines of the Asian Fencing Championships 2026 held in New Delhi. Exam importance: Areas of collaboration include athlete promotion, fan engagement, communications, stakeholder outreach, and initiatives to increase the visibility and appeal of fencing. Fencing was part of the original modern Olympics in 1896; FIE is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland; the three fencing weapons are foil, épée, and sabre; the LA 2028 Summer Olympics are scheduled from 14 July – 30 August 2028; Rajeev Mehta is also Secretary General of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

  • International Day of Women in Diplomacy 2026 – 24 June – The UN's International Day of Women in Diplomacy (IDWID) is observed annually on 24 June to recognise women's contributions to diplomacy and promote their equal participation in leadership and decision-making. The day was proclaimed by the UNGA on 20 June 2022 through Resolution A/RES/76/269; first observed on 24 June 2023. Exam importance: The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and UN Women released the 2026 Women in Politics map on this day. India ranks 151st globally with women holding 13.8% of parliamentary seats, and 173rd in women's representation among Cabinet ministers with only 5.6% of Cabinet positions held by women. 
  • Passport Seva Divas 2026 – 24 June (14th Observance) – Passport Seva Divas is observed annually on 24 June across India to mark the enactment of the Passports Act, 1967, which came into force on 24 June 1967. The MEA designated 24 June as Passport Seva Divas in 2013; 2026 marks its 14th observance. The MEA organised the Annual Regional Passport Officers' (RPO) Conference from 17–19 June 2026 at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi. Exam importance: India processes over 1.5 crore passports annually (one of the highest in the world); the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) has been a key e-governance initiative, with over 500 Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) operational across India; MEA has digitised 100% of passport services.
  • Day of the Seafarer 2026 – 25 June (16th Edition) – The UN Day of the Seafarer (DotS) is observed annually on 25 June to recognise the vital contribution of seafarers to international maritime trade and the global economy. The 2026 theme is "Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks." The DotS was established through Resolution 2 adopted at a diplomatic conference in Manila, Philippines, from 21–25 June 2010; first observed on 25 June 2011.
