  • India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) Comes into Force on 15 July 2026 – The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) - signed at Chequers, UK, on 24 July 2025 by PM Narendra Modi and UK PM Keir Starmer - came into force on 15 July 2026, becoming India's most ambitious bilateral trade agreement to date. The UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) entered into force on 15 July 2026. The UK exported £19 billion of goods and services to India in the year to September 2025, while UK imports from India were £28 billion. The agreement aims to reduce barriers to trade between the UK and India. Exam importance: This will be the sixth free trade agreement to be implemented by the Narendra Modi government. Earlier, India implemented such pacts with Mauritius, UAE, Australia, EFTA (European Free Trade Association), and Oman. The agreement will unlock duty-free access for nearly 99% of Indian exports. All labour-intensive sectors such as garments, textiles, footwear, carpets, processed food, cereals, vegetables, fruits and spices, fish, meat and processed products will now enter the UK market with zero duty. The agreement is expected to increase UK GDP by £4.8 billion, raise real wages by £2.2 billion, and boost UK-India bilateral trade by £25.5 billion annually in the long term. The agreement covers 30 chapters, including trade in products and services, digital trade, government procurement and MSMEs. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal called it India's "most aspirational" trade deal to date. In 2024, bilateral services trade totalled $35.44 billion. The CETA reduces UK tariffs on Indian exports by up to £400 million/year when in force, potentially reaching £900 million after 10 years; the CETA spans approximately 20,000 pages and covers 30 chapters including innovation, labour, environment, and gender; India's bilateral goods trade with UK reached USD 25.12 billion in FY26; UK is one of India's top 5 FDI sources; the CETA also provides mobility commitments for Indian professionals - a key win given the Indian IT and services sector's presence in the UK.
